Job Description

We are looking for a design editor to join the News Design team.

Our visual journalists elevate The Post's content across platforms through innovative storytelling that informs and captivates our readers. Our designers and editors create new editorial brands, thematic packages and story presentations on multiple surfaces, including washingtonpost.com, mobile apps, newsletters, a printed newspaper, a magazine and social media.
Our design editors are vital to our storytelling efforts. They partner with designers on creating presentations that are vibrant and adaptive to meet readers where they are.

The ideal candidate is a strong collaborator and problem solver, is adaptable and has a vision for telling stories across multiple platforms. An understanding of motion graphics and previous management experience are a plus.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and will require a weekend shift on a rotating basis as well as occasional evening work.

Responsibilities
Work seamlessly with the design leadership to inspire, enable, energize and coach a world-class creative team while cultivating a culture of innovation. Support design work that appears in off-platform environments and utilizes a wide array of design techniques. Solve workflow and technical hurdles to find avenues to tell stories across multiple platforms efficiently. Lead art direction that is engaging and help develop content-driven designs and/or illustrations that are smart, daring and reader-centric. Support the development of enhanced storytelling presentations with excellent user-experience design through strong collaborative relationships with departments throughout the newsroom.

Key qualifications
Experience leading cross-disciplinary teams and managing the growth of designers and editors. A portfolio of work that demonstrates a strong visual aesthetic, innovative and user-centered design work, and storytelling that employs a range of approaches - including art direction, typography and use of color. A collaborative spirit and the ability to build strong relationships. An aptitude for problem-solving, simplifying and communicating throughout complex visual storytelling challenges. Experience in leading work that showcases bold experimentation and a willingness to push the bounds of storytelling. Experience with art direction and working with freelance artists.

McClatchy is hiring a part-time Design-Editor for our Publishing Center, which is responsible for putting out print editions for newsrooms across the US. This position prepares editorial content for print, which may include editing content to optimize for specific print usages or page design using templates and shapes.

To be successful as an Design-Editor, it is essential that you can focus on tasks, have analytical skills, deal with multiple (strict) deadlines and changing priorities in a high volume and fast paced environment.

Our Design-Editor needs to Execute core skills at a higher level of expertise (i.e. fine-tune high-profile content for print readers) AND ability to fulfill roles in more than one core skill area (design, finishing, quality control, print planning, wire editing).

Demonstrates excellent news judgment and can handle demands for multiple newsrooms. Able to make decisions about story play for multiple markets. This position requires diplomacy, negotiating and communication skills. Trusted with the most important of our editorial content, sensitive stories and breaking news situations. May also be proficient navigating wires and handling wire content. May also be responsible for high-end design projects, which involve collaboration with the newsroom.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Make decisions about story play for multiple markets.
* Perform a role in page design for print at a level that meets publication standards.
* May be called upon to perform quality control or wire editing roles.
* Handle demands for multiple newsrooms and editors.
* Meet all product deadlines and standards for quality.
* Help identify and implement ways to improve operational efficiency.

* Ability to make edits in stories in order to fit the print usage, including headline and cutline writing, and making sensible trims to overset stories; demonstrate high-level design and/or editing skills.
* Ability to create and distribute story packages, including wire content and databases, for various platforms as needed.
* Strong news judgment.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills necessary to meet the requirements of multiple editors, publishers and departments at each news organization.
* Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to multitask on deadline.
* Relied upon to troubleshoot problems and quickly implement solutions.
* Works under minimal or no supervision to complete design and/or editing duties.
* Must be proficient with virtual communications technology and channels.
* Must be professional in dealing with colleagues, employees and management.
* Ability and deal with changing priorities, deadlines, and stress
* Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
