About the Role:
We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished medicinal chemist to join our rapidly growing small molecule discovery team. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of advancing compounds into the clinic and leading cross functional project teams in the smooth execution of project strategy. This role will be part of the core chemistry leadership team and will help set and execute the overall chemistry strategy to rapidly advance compounds across multiple programs in CNS and endocrine therapeutic areas. They will serve as a scientific expert in medicinal chemistry for the evaluation of new internal targets and external opportunities. They will be responsible for identifying talent and mentoring internal and external FTEs to build a sustainable productive and impactful team.

Provides strategic direction and leadership for selected projects and departmental initiatives within the chemistry group. Provides medicinal chemistry expertise for new target evaluations and sets the strategy for clear go/no go milestones for projects. Conducts and collaborates with other departments on the principles and theories in chemistry research, drug discovery and drug development. Develops strategies to ensure effective achievement of scientific objectives. May develop budgets for capital expenditures and labor. Provides supervision and mentorship to Neurocrine's research staff members (internal and external) including activities supporting drug discovery and drug development. Accountable for growing capabilities in such technologies as they aligned with Neurocrine's business objectives.

Your Contributions (include, but are not limited to):
Project and portfolio leadership including setting both program and chemistry strategy for selected projects
Directs a team of scientists, coordinates cross functional activities across multiple drug discovery programs, and drives the development and incorporation of novel technologies
Oversees the patent and publication strategy for projects. Leads writing of scientific publications and patents. Presents study results externally where appropriate
Conducts and collaborates with others on the principles and theories in chemistry research, drug discovery and drug development Provides medicinal chemistry expertise to new target diligence and external opportunities
Anticipates potential issues and provides contingencies and resolutions to continuously improve the design, make, test, analyze cycle of drug discovery
Develops strategies to ensure effective achievement of scientific objectives across multiple projects Partners with other top managers to establish company policies Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the project or function
Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements:
BS/BA degree in a relevant scientific discipline (chemistry preferred) and 15+ years of relevant technical and management experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Significant practical experience conducting method transfer both as the originating and receiving site. Significant experience evaluating analytical data and drawing meaningful conclusions ORMS/MA degree preferred and 13+ years of similar experience noted above ORPhD preferred and 10+ years of similar experience noted above and Extensive previous managerial experiences also required Demonstrated scientific excellence and clinical expertise in chemistry research Recognized expertise, including publication of significant contributions to a field over time Overall strong work ethic and willingness to engage in laboratory experimentation across therapeutic areas Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills are required for interacting with both internal and external resources Expert understanding of the drug discovery process Recognized as an internal thought leader with extensive technical and business expertise within a strategic organization Applies in-depth knowledge of own function, business / commercial / scientific expertise to solve critical issues successfully and innovatively Evaluates key business / scientific challenges and completes complex, ambiguous initiatives having cross-functional impact Ability to effectively interact with multiple functions across the organization, and effectively communicate results and strategies to staff and company executives Strong attention to detail, excellent written and oral communication skills

Masters degree with 15-20 years relevant experience in a biotech or pharma setting

Demonstrated success in delivering multiple novel agents into clinical development

Extensive project leadership experience bringing teams through lead optimization and selection of development candidates

Demonstrated track record of patents and publications in medicinal chemistry

Intellectual fearlessness and strong innovative streak

Ability to work with and manage multifunction teams

Extensive working knowledge of modern medicinal chemistry and drug discovery techniques (e.g., fragment and structure-based drug design, computational chemistry, multi-parametric optimization of bioactivity/physicochemical/ADME properties)

Experience in the discovery of covalent drug molecules very highly preferred

Self-motivated and enthusiastic; fast learner who can identify the core project challenges and expeditiously change course as required in a fast-paced organization

Team player who will be able to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment

A commitment to excellence, maintaining detailed records and having superb data organization skills
