Electrical test technician job description

General Scope: Plasser American Corporation, the leading manufacturer of track maintenance machinery is looking for an experienced electrical technician to join its team within its manufacturing plant located in Chesapeake, Va. The Electrical Technician focused on setup, inspection, calibration, and troubleshooting of AC and DC systems on railroad maintenance equipment. The Electrical Technician will function primarily on the regular day shift, Monday through Friday, although occasional weekend work, overtime, and travel may be required based on production needs.

Performs functions such as assembling, testing, modifying, calibrating, and troubleshooting of complex electro-mechanical systems.

Maintain records of inspections (as required) on the machines. Tests, analyzes, and prepares detailed summary reports, on sub-systems that include, but not limited to generators, power distribution (AC & DC), transducers, and control systems.

Properly use tools ranging from common hand and power tools to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices

Interpret and understand engineering drawings, manufacturer's instructions, maintenance procedures, specifications and ensure compliance with customer specifications, work orders, and company quality standards.

Receive and apply training on new technologies equipment, safety, and work related subjects

Identify and correct unsafe conditions and practices. Inspect for quality workmanship during the machine assembly process.

Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and quality auditors.

Ability to troubleshoot/identify root cause, and systematically solve problems.

Basic requirements:

Minimum 3 years' experience in power generation or related industry (automotive, electrical, heavy machinery, etc.).

Knowledge of DC/AC, Voltage Circuit Theory and practical troubleshooting skills

Must have basic computer skills (email, internet, MS office)

Effective verbal and written communication skills in English. Capable of working in a team environment

Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering blueprints.

Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Preferred Skills:

Familiar with PLC systems is a plus

Experience in Hydraulic and Pneumatic systems

Knowledge of railroad track maintenance machinery is a plus.

Ability to plan activities.

Good mathematical skills, Understanding of the metric system.

Military experience in power generation is a plus

Education:

Minimum of a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Accredited trade school, Military “A” school and or a combination of experience and training

Knowledge: Incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

Basic knowledge in the fields of electricity/electronics and industrial hydraulics/pneumatics.

Basic knowledge in the use of electronic test equipment.

- Set up, adjust, and calibrate standard test apparatus or device test equipment to conduct, functional, operational, and environmental and life tests to evaluate performance and reliability of prototype and/or production model satellites per the applicable test procedure.
- Perform S/C performance testing of communications, telemetry and command, thermal, power, propulsion and attitude/control subsystems per the applicable procedure.
Applies power and configures the spacecraft per the applicable test procedure.
- Understand the operation of various types of test equipment such as oscilloscopes and Digital Volt Meters.
- Operate spacecraft test consoles such as the Payload and Electrical test Racks per applicable test procedures.
Familiar with windows style PC operating systems.
- Determine methods & sequences of operations to test components and systems in conformance with published procedures, engineering specs.
- Analyze and interpret electrical test data. Provide diagnostic malfunctions and offer test result feedback to Vehicle and System Engineers.
- Must have a strong background in electronics, adhering to procedures and attention to detail
- Must adhere to Company's procedures while focusing on attention to detail.
- Must read, understand, and follow Company's Quality policies and ISO 9000 directives.
- Write technical reports to describe and illustrate system's operating characteristics, malfunctions, and deviations from design specifications for engineers review and determination.
Responsible for writing detailed pass down, TAR and NCR reports.
- Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with other team members.
Must have good teamwork skills.
- Willing and able to work off shifts as required; willing to work weekends and holidays
- Willing and able to travel to support launch base efforts and off-site environmental testing.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

- Minimum 5-7 years satellite integration and test experience or related electrical experience required.
- Must possess technical knowledge of at least (2) of the following subsystems: communications, telemetry and command, thermal, power, propulsion, attitude or control systems.
- 2 years Technical, Engineering or Technical Military Training with concentration in Electronics.
- AS/AA Electronics Degree or equivalent preferred.
