Position Summary

The Engineering Annual Giving Team aims to increase annual giving and participation from Columbia Engineering's alumni, parents, students and friends. Annual Gifts to the Engineering School provide crucial support to the School's core areas of greatest need including financial aid, faculty support, current research, and student life and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Reporting to the Director of Annual Giving at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), the Leadership Giving Officer works with donors, prospects, and volunteers who have the capacity to make annual gifts at the higher leadership levels ($10,000 to $100,000). The Leadership Giving Officer will be focused on validating and cultivating our highest rated prospects and converting them into engaged parents and alumni and Dean's Leadership Society (DLS) donors, while also identifying those who have major gift potential.

The Leadership Giving Officer cultivates relationships with parents and alumni donors and potential donors to help drive giving to the school, in line with the donor's interests. Along with overseeing donor cultivation and solicitations the Leadership Giving Officer sets and builds upon the strategy for Parent's Council events and cultivation efforts. This strategy drives our leadership Annual Giving goals as well as goals around maximizing parent giving at the major gift level, in partnership with the Senior Director of Major Gifts and the Director of Development, Annual Giving.

Responsibilities

* (20%) Manages a pool of approximately 200 giving prospects including both alumni and those with a parent relationship at Columbia. Identifies and prioritizes prospects and personally solicits gifts from selected prospects, with a goal of 125 substantive contacts and 200 direct solicitations each year;
* (20%) Focus on both new gifts at the leadership gift level, particularly identifying alums and parents to add to our pipeline, and upgrading existing donors. Develop ask strategies for each prospect in the portfolio. Partners with the Annual Giving Team on all major campaigns including but not limited to Giving Day and Pi Day. Manages the Parents Council;
* (20%) Identifies current and future parent leaders for the school and sets a strategy and executes parents programming; Organizes at least two annual Parents Council meetings and parent activities with the Dean of the Engineering School; Responsible for setting a strategy for the communications and marketing to the Parents Council members;
* (20%) During the annual goal-setting process, work with the Director of Development, Annual Giving, to help set fundraising dollar and donor goals for leadership-level annual giving each year, including projections for future years in order to help the School attain and sustain an increased donor base and annual giving level.
* (10%) Coordinates activities with other Annual Giving colleagues, major gift, and alumni relations staff in SEAS, and other staff throughout the Office of Alumni and Development. Works closely with SEAS major gift staff on the solicitation of high-end gifts from major gift parent and alumni prospects, with planned giving staff as appropriate, and with staff in other schools as needed on shared prospects.
* (10%) Additional duties, or special projects as assigned.

* Bachelor's degree required. Three to five years of applicable experience required.
* Demonstrated experience and interest in personal solicitation of large annual gifts ($10,000 to $100,000) as well as volunteer management and motivation.

Essential Functions (Job Duties)

Coordinate, execute and manage alumni programs for the College of Engineering (College). Oversee the implementation and promotion of social and academic programs and events.

Create and update the annual operating plan for the College to meet alumni engagement goals and objectives. Build a strong program to increase participation while meeting alumni engagement objectives and data enhancement goals. Coordinate distribution of electronic communications to targeted alumni audience.

Collaborate with the Dean, development team and centrally-based colleagues to increase donor support. Cultivate and engage prospects in strategic ways. Use planned activities for pipeline development and to identify prospective donors for the College. Use thoughtful communications to cultivate prospective donors and demonstrate the positive impact of alumni and donor involvement.

Work closely with the Office of Alumni Relations to align strategies, communications and programming with overall divisional goals. Ensure consistent messaging across all communication channels. Meet regularly to collaborate and review opportunities for partnership.

Manage and oversee the activities of the Engineering Alumni Council and other volunteer opportunities for College of Engineering alumni, including the Industry Mentor Program.

Prepare project and event budgets. Monitor expenditures to ensure compliance with university policy and procedures.

Remain current with alumni and donor relations trends. Serve as a resource on successful activities, alumni engagement techniques and methods. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education Bachelor's degree

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in marketing, public relations, business administration or related field.

Knowledge of fundraising software preferred. Reasonable knowledge and understanding of university policies and procedures.

Experience Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)

Qualified candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience as a development, marketing or event management professional. Higher education development or alumni relations experience and prior volunteer management experience preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL
  • Performs maintenance and repairs to main engine, machinery, and equipment indicators when vessels are underway.
  • Maintains electrical power, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water, sewerage systems, and electrical equipment excluding radio and navigational aids.
  • Responsible for routine maintenance of the machinery and equipment. This should include, but is not limited to, changing oil and filters, greasing the steering gear, anchor windlass, etc., performing electrical systems' maintenance, testing for and maintaining proper levels of diesel engine water treatment, and taking and mailing of lube oil samples.
  • Upkeep and cleanliness of all engineering spaces.
  • Start engines to propel ships and regulate engines and power transmissions to control speeds of ships, according to directions from captains/chief engineers.
  • Monitor and test operations of engines and other equipment so that malfunctions and their causes can be identified.
  • Maintain and repair engines, electric motors, pumps, winches and other mechanical and electrical equipment, lifeboat motors, or assist other crew members with maintenance and repair duties.
  • Performs and participates in emergency drills as required.
  • Performs general marine vessel maintenance and repair work such as repairing leaks, finishing interiors, refueling, and maintaining decks.
