Job Description – Fulfillment of Mission
The Roger Bacon Academy is an education management organization that manages multiple charter schools in Southeastern North Carolina. Our Classical Charter Schools of Wilmington campus has an opening for an EC Teacher Assistant (Elementary K-5).


The following mission outlines the expectations of all employees at the school level as well as employees of The Roger Bacon Academy in providing support to the schools. Exceptional Education Teacher Assistant – Job Responsibilities


Purpose:


Under general supervision, provides a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting a teacher of students with disabilities. The assistant may perform a wide range of tasks in order to support the efforts of the lead teacher, meet the needs of all students, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for all students.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Assists classroom and/ or EC teachers with academic and student behaviors and may lead small group activities


Assists teacher with general housekeeping, clerical duties and repair/maintenance of school equipment


Stays abreast of activities performed by the teacher, daily routines of the classroom, student handbook rules, handbook of Parent’s Rights and procedures to follow in the event of an emergency


Obtains and maintains Crisis Intervention certification


Stays abreast of the following: methods of adapting instruction, equipment and tools for children with special needs; confidentiality regulations; principles of organization and administration of the school district; curriculum for the grade/age of the children with which assistant is assigned to work; child development disabilities


Assists teacher with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness


Constantly monitors the safety and well-being of students; monitors student attitudes and encourages self-esteem; assists students with becoming increasingly independent


Monitors student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroom; records time out and in-class suspension; assists with crisis prevention; restrains students as needed


Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; conducts short sessions on improving study skills; creates and modifies materials to match student abilities; modifies tests for students; provides one-on-one assistance as needed


Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students


Performs various clerical duties as needed, maintains records of student progress; develops and files incident reports; grades student papers and scores tests; checks daily attendance; makes copies; develops classroom display and instructional materials; maintains and operates audiovisual equipment; orders supplies; maintains class files, etc.


Feeds students when necessary; toilets students, if needed; and assists with any other tasks students are not able to perform for themselves


Participates in staff development as directed


Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.


Other Duties:


The position of Exceptional Education Teacher Assistant reports to the assigned Exceptional Education Teacher. This position is a 10-month position that follows the school academic calendar.


Qualifications




The Exceptional Education Teacher Assistant will have the following experience and attributes:


An Associate’s degree in any field is required; focus in education, early childhood development, and experience with children with disabilities desired.


Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment.


Ability to perform clerical duties.


Ability to operate common office machines.


Ability to maintain basic files and records.


Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.


Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitates by work assignments.


Physical ability to lift/carry 20 lbs and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.
