Program Overview
Administration & Leadership
The fellow will serve as a VPIT (Virtual Provider in Triage) Operations Director, acquiring advanced leadership experience in the coordination, management, and continuous optimization of a telehealth service spanning multiple, operationally diverse emergency department sites. In addition, they will actively contribute to the operational oversight of the Virtual Urgent Care and SCDC Virtual Emergency Triage services.
Capstone Project
Each fellow will design and launch a new telehealth service from concept to implementation. This project includes service design, workflow development, pro forma creation, stakeholder engagement, and executive level pitching, providing practical experience in leading digital transformation within a complex healthcare system.
Research & Innovation
The fellowship empowers fellows to lead impactful scholarly work that drives the digital transformation of emergency medicine. Through these projects, fellows will learn how to translate data driven insights into operational and clinical improvements that advance telehealth innovation. Each fellow is expected to present their work at two conferences, one regional and one national, and is encouraged to publish in peer reviewed journals.
Education & Training
The fellow will serve as the lead instructor for the Emergency Medicine Telehealth Elective (EMED872), a two-week rotation for fourth year medical students and interprofessional learners. Each block includes two to four students. The fellow oversees all aspects of their experience, including orientation, teaching sessions, clinical observation, and mentorship. This ensures a high-quality, engaging, and collaborative learning environment that promotes understanding and acceptance of telehealth and digital technologies, with the goal of adoption and integration into their future practice.
In addition, fellows will host quarterly Journal Club and Strategic Workgroup sessions, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary discussion, scholarly collaboration, and strategic planning around telehealth operations, innovation, and future program development.
Program Outcome
Graduates will emerge as forward-thinking physician leaders equipped to design, implement, and scale telehealth solutions that improve accessibility, efficiency, and quality of care while shaping the future of emergency medicine through innovation, education, and systems leadership. The optional second year offers fellows the opportunity to expand their impact through formal administrative training, earning an MBA or MHA to complement their telehealth and operational leadership experience, positioning them for systemwide or executive level roles in healthcare innovation.
Clinical Responsibilities
Fellows will be required to provide hands-on clinical care at both Emergency Departments at MUSC. EMTH fellows are expected to provide a total of 752 clinical hours per year, with the possibility to moonlight above these required hours if other fellowship requirements are met.
Licensures, Registrations, and Certifications
Candidate must be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency and be board-certified or board-eligible. A South Carolina medical license and hospital credentialing are required prior to the start date of the EMTH Fellowship.
