Field applications engineer job description

The best NI Field Application Engineers effectively balance their time between face-to-face interactions with target customers, technical activities, and providing insight and feedback as the voice of the customer. Field Application Engineers serve as highly trusted technical consultants in the Aerospace, Defense & Government (ADG) Industry, allowing them to influence the technical direction of target accounts to ensure mutual customer and long-term NI success. This position is compensated by 80% base salary and 20% variable pay based on achievement of key sales objectives and account revenue.
NI Field Applications Engineers spend most of their time:


Building key technical relationships at top accounts by demonstrating great technical credibility that increases customer technical confidence in NI Understanding and assisting in creation of customer technical requirements Providing recommendations on software and hardware architectures while helping customers understand the test system development process to ensure success Collaborating with NI Account Managers as part of an account team to lead development and execution of the account technical strategy which provides better insight to the overall account strategy and opportunity pipeline Coordinating with and informing internal stakeholders to execute on account technical initiatives and provide feedback to increase account success Leveraging industry, application area, and account knowledge to uncover and influence customer future technical needs and challenges thereby generating further technical demand for NI products, services, and support

Basic Qualifications:

BS degree and/or equivalent years of relevant experience. 5+ years of Test and Measurement industry experience 3+ years of progressive software programming experience Willing and able to travel - Regionally and to Austin, TX up to 25% of time

To provide customers with technical marketing assistance in the design, integration, and solutions to power supply applications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Coordinates technical liaison services between management, production department, sales department, and customers with newly developed techniques or practices in applying company products. Informs customers of new types, specifications, and end-uses of products. Confers with marketing department managers to discuss new specifications required by customers and evaluate existing/new product performance and issues. Provides product specifications and follows up on technical support for specific applications. Provides technical support to sales staff in determining applications of power supply products to customer requirements. Records, analyzes, and informs concerned personnel of production quality assurance and sales departments of status and disposition of customer complaints and claims. Creates detailed customer trip reports. Writes application notes for various product applications. Tests products using laboratory equipment to characterize product performance. Designs power supplies into system applications; prepares and presents demonstrations and applications of power supplies. Conducts on site and virtual customer visits, company trade shows and product marketing presentations. Trains customers, staff and sales teams in person and virtually on company information and products.

Education and/or Experience
Electronic/Electrical Engineering Bachelor's degree from four-year College or University; a minimum 2 - 5 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.


Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.


Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

This Power Expert will be a Silicon Carbide Evangelist. Will be responsible for everything from presenting/teaching the Value Proposition of Silicon Carbide to working closely with customers in defining the right Silicon Carbide implementation for their customer's application needs in the Western Region of North America.

The Day-to-Day:
Work closely with customers on understanding their requirement so to properly provide everything from device selection (both SiC Device & Gate Driver) to troubleshooting to thermal analysis Collaborate with Sales on defining strategies to win not only with current customers but future customers/segments Collaborate with BU on providing feedback/insight on current products/application while also helping define future products/roadmaps Work towards becoming your Customer's “Technical Advisor”. Our goal is to be the customer's first call when they have a Silicon Carbide question/need.

This Job is Right for You if You Have (Minimum Requirements):
7+ years experience in power electronics, with either a Bachelor or Masters degree in Electrical EngineeringHands-on experience with AC/DC high power designs and extensive knowledge in testing and debug Good understanding of different topologies (Half/Full Bridge, PFC, Inverter and Resonant circuit such as LLC/PSFB) and power electronics control theory Strong Communication and Presentation skills that can adapt from highly technical one on one discussions to full audiences Ability to travel for customer engagement/support needs (25-30%) Regional Support: California, Arizona, Western Canada and Rocky Mountain region
