1960 – Gold Eagle Facility at 2700 N Halsted opens for business.
Most Western nations refused to endorse the racial segregation of the African nation by purchasing gold coinage, and as a result, Krugerrands were not globally accepted. It was not until 1967 that the world’s first one-ounce gold bullion coin was produced by the South African government.
Congress had been petitioning for the return of a gold American coin since 1981, so with the passing of the act, the Gold American Eagle was the favorite for mint production.
