The Morning Star Company and its affiliates operate three tomato processing facilities in Central California, processing over 1/3 of the California processing tomato crop, in addition to tomato transplanting, farming, harvesting and trucking operations. The company employs approximately 600 year-round and 2,500 seasonal colleagues.

The Opportunity

The Mission of this individual is to produce and supply our hotel and restaurant with fresh produce, herbs and flowers from an 18,000 square foot, glass greenhouse, plus surrounding open ground (one to two acres for vegetables, olives, and grapes). Any additional production should be sold at local farmers’ markets. In addition, the Hotel property is about 20 acres in total, with extensive landscaping where your expertise may be applicable. The greenhouse may be required to perform tomato seed development research.

This Colleague will require a decent technical agriculture and some business background. This individual will work with associated Colleagues in our commercial greenhouse operations, and other opportunities in the company as their abilities enable them. The company has other facilities which require landscaping expertise.

Elements of the Position

All aspects of product production are expected to be accomplished, including, but not limited to product variety selection, growing techniques, personnel, resource acquisition, facility operations and maintenance, information acquisition and analysis and marketing and sales. It will be your operation to make a go of it.

Compensation

Compensation and benefits provided will depend on the market for these capabilities, but somewhere in the range of $50,000 to $75,000 would be expected. We will entertain any arrangement which is mutually beneficial.

Join our team:

As the successful Nursery Greenhouse Manager you will be working closely with the East Coast Division Manager (over 30 years with Speedling!) as well as the CEO (13 years with Speedling). This role will analyze, evaluate and effectively plan day to day operations to maximize value of the facility. This includes to organize and direct all daily activities to produce horticultural transplants with consistent quality meeting the customer expectations while maximizing the margin and profit.

The job details:

• Manage nursery to maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction.
• Grow and deliver large volumes of high-quality crops.
• Hire, mentor, train and develop direct reports and their direct reports to build a stronger team.
• Work closely with all Supervisors, Crew Leaders, and Office Staff to ensure that all aspects of each facility are running efficiently.
• Improve and implement spray programs and submit monthly use reports to county.
• Manage resources including greenhouse and outdoor growing areas to maximize production, minimize impact from environmental conditions and mitigate company exposure and liability.
• Select, purchase, or approve purchase of raw materials such as seed, plant nutrients, and disease control chemicals.
• Make sure all tools for all jobs are available so the jobs can be done. Plastic, soil media, labels etc.
• Manage expenses including Capital Expenditure plan and oversee all renovations or additions.
• Coordinate clerical, record keeping, inventory, requisition, and marketing activities with functional leaders throughout the company.
• Ensure Injury Illness Prevention Program is up to date with Company-wide policies and procedures and adhered to by the employees.
• Maintain Safety programs and other aspects of regulatory compliance.
• Oversee and advise on all repairs and maintenance projects.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in horticulture, plant science, biology, or botany with 4 - 6+ years of experience in greenhouse operations and management
• Experience working with large scale indoor grow or controlled greenhouse operations
• Prior experience with greenhouse computer control systems, with the ability to operate, maintain, and perform basic repairs preferred
• Extensive working knowledge of Plant Growth Chambers and operations
• Exceptional computer skills (Mac and PC, database, word processing)
• Effective communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the general public
• Team Management experience
• Flexibility, resourcefulness and vision to effectively lead a team in a fast paced research environment within a rapidly growing company.

• Work with research teams and greenhouse technicians to optimize protocols and develop standard operating procedures.

• Experience in managing pathogen assays including viral, bacteria and fungus.
• Prior experience working with transgenic organisms
