Wheaton Park District grounds/maintenance specialist job description

Minimum eighteen (18) years of age. Must have good communication and time management skills and be able to work calmly and effectively under pressure.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Attendance at work site as scheduled; must be available to work other shifts and overtime as required. Must be available to be reassigned to another division if needed.
  2. Perform minor building and equipment repairs.
  3. Paint and stain District property where needed.
  4. Weed flowerbeds and grounds.
  5. Hardscape and landscape duties.
  6. Operate tractor, utility truck, hand tools, power tools, and other machinery as necessary.
  7. Shovel snow and de-ice as needed.
  8. Collect garbage and pick-up litter in parks.
  9. Path and road maintenance, includes hot & cold patching, gravel road grading, and seal coat.
  10. May be required to work special events.
  11. Wear personal protective equipment for job function when needed.
  12. Maintain effective two-way communication while dealing with concerns in the field with all district staff and immediate supervisor.
  13. Carry two way or cell phone communication at all times while working.
  14. Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner to the internal customer that will facilitate team building and exceptional customer service to the external customer.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: continuously walk/move and position one’s self to perform maintenance; occasionally climb stairs/ladder, repetitive use of hands/arms, vibration and grasping while working with tools and equipment, and move objects such as ladders, tools, equipment, etc. weighing up to 50 lbs., and over 50 lbs. with assistance, eye/hand coordination, and fine manipulation; occasionally walk on uneven ground. Must be able to drive.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: handle all weather conditions while traveling between facilities, frequently encounter rain, snow, insects, dirt, poisonous plants, grease, oil, mud; occasional confined spaces, heights over 12 feet, fumes, gases, odors, dust, mold, animal hair, dander, feces, noise over 85 dbls., wet, slippery floors and surfaces; rarely encounter pesticides, chemicals and smoke.

HOURS

28 hours per week - Monday - Friday (alternating 3 days one week and 4 days the next week).

Manages the grounds provided at a cemetery or funeral home location(s). Performs all grounds keeping and maintenance matters on the properties and maintains the overall appearance of a cemetery, mausoleum or funeral home location.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

* Mows grass, plows snow, waters lawns, fertilizes and trims shrubs, tends flower beds and regularly inspects assigned work areas to insure proper standards are maintained
* Operates lawn and grounds equipment including push and power mowers, snow blowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers and other related power equipment
* Removes debris and trash from grounds. May include turning down vases and removing wilted flowers
* Participates on teams for openings and closings for interments, entombments and inurnments
* May perform disinterment
* May determine the location and layout of individual graves with assistance, complying with verification procedures
* May perform minor repairs to the cemetery and or building systems
* May perform some of the duties associated with cremations such as maintaining inventory and complying with federal and state cremation regulations
* Must follow safety rules and ensure compliance with the operating procedures of corporate, federal, state and local regulations, including OSHA regulations and Safety and Environmental guidelines
* May assist in moving and installing burial vaults
