Employment Status: Administrative

Description of Key Responsibility:

1. As a means of supporting student persistence, create a community living environment that fosters academic success, respect, support, and positive human interaction.

2. Know residents individually and intentionally maximize those relationships to support student success in the living-learning environment.

3. To ensure student success and persistence, assist students who are experiencing personal difficulties through consultation and/or referral to other resources. Follow-up/Case manage referrals from the Behavioral Intervention Team.

4. Supervise Resident Assistants. Participate in their selection, provide appropriate training, schedule and assign their work, monitor and evaluate their performance, and make corrective and/or disciplinary interventions as necessary.

5. Facilitate check-in and check-out procedures at the beginning and end of each semester. Maintain accurate records of keys and occupancy. Maintain control over issuing, replacement, and collection of room keys. Perform inspections and document condition of rooms, including determination of damage charges to be assessed.

6. Attend Residence Life staff meetings and facilitate meetings involving Resident Assistants. Serve on committees and participate in meetings in a variety of settings. Represent the College and the department by participating in meetings of municipal, civic and professional organizations.

7. Oversee the development and implementation of a variety of social and educational programs for resident students. Monitor and assist Resident Assistants in planning and conducting programs, including those that involve other campus organizations and personnel, as well as outside presenters and entertainers. When appropriate, participate in and/or conduct programs. Manage and account for funds allocated for residential programming.

8. Serve as a resource for promoting and expanding diversity and inclusion within the residence halls. Provide support for programs, curricula, and trainings to build the multicultural competence of Resident Assistants (RAs) and residents, in particular as they relate to the student experience. Work with colleagues in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Office of Multicultural Affairs on these initiatives as appropriate.

9. For the purpose having Residence Life staff available to assist students and families at all times, participate in a 24-hour duty rotation schedule with other hall directors to include weekdays, weekends, and holidays throughout the calendar year.

10. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

11. Support the College's mission, vision and values, and contribute to the advancement of the College's Strategic Plan.

12. Demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement

13. Respond to unexpected situations such as disputes between students, violations of College policies by students, medical and other emergencies. In cases of illness or injury, ensure that established procedures are followed and that students, or others, receive appropriate care.

14. Intervene in and document, when appropriate, student behavior which is inconsistent with College policy or disruptive to the campus community. Determine and implement corrective action, which may include mediation, counseling, and/or referral to the College's student conduct process.

15. Serve as Administrative Hearing Officer as part of the College Student Conduct process.

16. Serve as a facility manager. Perform regular tours of residential facilities to account for furnishings, keys, equipment, safety hazards, maintenance and cleaning needs. Ensure that buildings and their contents are properly maintained, primarily by reporting deficiencies to maintenance and custodial personnel.

17. Assist with the operation of the Office of Residence Life by performing various administrative tasks. This may include the coordination of special departmental projects. Hold office hours at the Office of Residence Life.

18. Participate in the New Student Orientation. Participate in and facilitate programs designed to assist new students in their transition to college life and to life living on campus.

19. Advise the Residence Hall Council (where appropriate) and provide direction for programming which furthers the mission of the department.

20. Perform related duties, projects, and tasks as assigned that contribute to the effective operation of the Office of Residence Life, and the College in general.

21. Complete duties associated with assigned collateral work during the academic year and/or the summer months.

Education/Training:

A bachelor's degree is required. A master's degree is preferred.

Experience:

Fluency of the Spanish language is preferred.

Job Summary

The Hall Director position is essential to the core mission of Michigan Housing. Hall Directors provide leadership to the residential operations in a way that maintains positive, multicultural, and learning-centered communities. The Hall Director may supervise a full time Community Center Manager and several paraprofessional student staff in day-to-day operations with residents, collaborates with other building staff in the opening and closing of the building, conducts crisis intervention and response, which includes communication and promotion of University policies and procedures, amongst other responsibilities. There is a possibility that the Hall Director will work directly with a co-Hall Director.

Responsibilities*

40% Supervision

Select, train, supervise, and evaluate up to 45 students in a collaborative team. Resident Advisors and student desk workers in a residence hall or apartment community housing 200 - 1,300 residents. Coordinate weekly staff meetings that update and reinforce training objectives, and intentionally focus on individual and staff development. Foster an environment that supports student safety and security. . Serve as member of the Residence Education Full-Time Professional Staff Leadership Team in providing consistent supervision of resident student staff, and a full-time Community Center Manager.

25% Administration:

Co-manage student residences housing 200 - 1,300 residents, collaborating with facilities services, dining services, living learning communities, building security, contracts and assignments, information technology, and other campus partners. Collaborate with Leadership Team members to open and close the halls. Make recommendations for facility upgrades and room designations. Responsible for Programming & Training and Community Center operational budgets averaging $10,500. Participate in departmental and division-wide committees. Participate and/or lead weekly meetings, including building, resident staff, leadership team, and one-on-one meetings with supervisor. Prepare periodic and annual reports. Serve as a point-person to make referrals and provide resources and referrals for students and support network persons as appropriate.

20% Student Development Educator:

Promote, encourage, and reward student learning, academic success, and co-curricular participation. Hold meaningful one-on-one and small group resident interactions to engage & develop community, educate about restorative practices, and support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the community. Advise and support Housing student groups, including Hall and Multicultural councils. Communicate and promote University policy and procedures including the Community Living at Michigan (CLAM), the Statement, and the Housing Student Conflict Resolution process. Demonstrate and promote restorative practices throughout the residential communities. Support student learning through the conduct and conflict resolution process. Serve as a facilitator for ALA 421 class for all newly hired student staff.

15% Crisis Response:

Participate in a rotating duty schedule, providing on-call/on-duty emergency and crisis response for students and family members for an area that houses approximately 3,000 students. Provide facilitation for conflict resolution issues, assist students and refer students to appropriate University and community resources. Provide in-person response to critical incidents and maintain on-going student follow-up until reasonable care is provided.

Required Qualifications*

* Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or related field.
* Minimum of 1-Year graduate or professional experience in Student Life.
* At least 6 months of supervisory experience.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary.

PURPOSE

Supports the development and administration of the Resident Hall residential life program

RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision:

* Directly supervises a staff of 6 undergraduate Resident Advisers (RAs) in developing communities for and responding to the needs of the Resident Hall residents; provides indirect supervision for entire RA staff of 17 in responding to the needs of approximately 750 residents
* Provides recognition for positive RA job performance; consults with the Resident Director to implement unit performance management process to address performance concerns as necessary

* Serves as primary advisor to students involved in the Residential Hall Council; consults with supervisor as needed to ensure clarity of expectations in advising student groups

Building Operations Management:
