Overview:
The Department of Philosophy and Religion in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2026. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department's research and teaching excellence in the field of philosophy.
Responsibilities:
* Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy, including introductory courses and specialized seminars
* Engage in high-quality research in the philosophy of democracy, including Western, non-Western, and/or intercultural approaches
* Participate in department, school, and university activities, including service and committee work
* Develop and maintain a strong research program, with a focus on publishing scholarly articles and books
* Advise and mentor students, particularly in the area of thesis and capstone projects
Qualifications:
* PhD or anticipated PhD completion by August 2026 in the field of philosophy
* Strong commitment to excellence in scholarly research and teaching
* Experience in teaching and research in the field of philosophy, particularly in the areas of Ancient Greek philosophy, feminist philosophy, Indigenous philosophy, philosophy of disability, or epistemology
* Ability to engage more than one philosophical tradition
