The laboratories of IU Health offer some of the most comprehensive laboratory services in Indiana! Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the laboratories perform more than 19 million tests a year. In addition to IU Health, laboratory testing services are provided to hospitals and physicians across the country.

The Lab Assistant Team Lead at the LAB leads the laboratory team in the coordination of general laboratory services including specimen collection, blood component preparation, pre-analytic processing of specimens, waived testing and moderate complexity testing as well as clerical tasks. Lead Lab Assistant will spend approximately 25% as ad hoc leader. The incumbent may be responsible for patient and specimen registration and delivery of specimens.
+ Requires HS Grad or GED Equivalent.

+ Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related science preferred.

+ Requires successfully completion of an initial and six (6) month competency for identified testing.

+ Requires successfully completion an annual competency assessment for identified testing. Requires a minimum of one (1) year experience in a laboratory setting; two (2) years of experience preferred.

+ Requires working knowledge of computers.

+ Requires excellent telephone skills.

+ Requires strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member and leader.

+ Requires ability to perform repetitive tasks for prolonged periods of time.

+ Requires complex problem-solving skills with ability to discern when to escalate.

+ May serve on appropriate committees or projects that contribute to the overall purpose and essential functions of the department.

We're looking for someone to join our team as a Lead Laboratory Assistant who:

Collects, distributes and analyzes specimens in an inpatient setting. Supports laboratory including specimen ordering, processing and preparation for testing. Monitors specimens for send out to reference laboratory. Assists in management and scheduling of the Laboratory Assistants/Phlebotomists. Acts as a leader among other Laboratory Assistants; leads a team in the performance of laboratory tasks including phlebotomy, specimen processing, send-outs, data collection, etc.; provides guidance to lower level Assistants.

Essential Functions:

* Supervises and schedules the laboratory assistants/phlebotomists. Adjusts daily work assignments to meet the demands of the department. Assists in writing or updating policies and procedures. Assists in orientation and training of new laboratory personnel.
* Collects, processes, and preserves specimens in inpatient settings. Performs clerical duties to process and report test results. Prioritizes based on order status (STAT, ASAP, routine.) Monitors section Quality Control. Communicates with others within the departments to facilitate the flow and quality of the lab work.
* Processes and maintains records of specimens sent to reference labs. Assists in inventory management including ordering supplies and stocking supplies. Is responsible for section equipment calibrations. Processes the data in the Laboratory Information System for ordered testing on specimens and processed information for proper billing of laboratory tests.
* Completes microbiology pre-analytical procedures and documentation for laboratory testing. Performs testing according to laboratory policies including quality control standards, calibrations, and documentation. Documents quality control, calibration and test results.
* Identifies specimens or tests results problems and notifies appropriate lab personnel. Reports panic, stat or other abnormal test results following approval of Clinical Lab Scientist. Is responsible for workup of failed specimens as sent by CAP or API.
* Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

You'll be successful with the following qualifications:

Education:

* High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required in CA; Preferred in HI and ORAssociate's/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred

Work Experience:

* Three years Phlebotomy experience in acute care environment: Preferred

Required Licenses/Certifications:

* Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) license: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HIRefer to the Required Licenses and Certifications list for additional job and/or unit specific requirements.

Job Description
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Lead provides oversight for shift operations and scientific support for his/her discipline to ensure that the Laboratory consistently performs accurate, reliable, and timely laboratory testing. In support of organizational objectives and in collaboration with management, the CLS Lead ensures that Laboratory staff are scheduled and assigned to necessary workstations, that equipment is functional, that staff are reassigned as needed to meet turnaround times, and that Laboratory procedures are performed safely and to the required technical standards. The CLS Lead also ensures completion of staff competency assessments, provides input for staff performance evaluations, and assists with investigations of unsatisfactory work that may lead to disciplinary action. The CLS Lead maintains his/her own technical competencies and skills, and functions as a CLS working within the scope of practice described for CLS I and/or CLS II

Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent.
Minimum 5 years CLS experience in an acute care hospital setting in the past 8 years.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements
Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license - California Department of Public Health - Laboratory Field Services
MT/MLS(ASCP) certification preferred
