Job Summary Sets up, adjusts, and operates numeric or computer numeric controlled hobbers, shapers, and shavers, producing a variety of close tolerance gears, splines, and pinions. Proof and edit program tapes. Manually program machining instructions into computer console. Essential Functions: Operate assigned machinery to fabricate parts to the required specifications by: Reading work orders and specification sheets before starting the machine. Properly powering up and down the machine. Loading and unloading parts. Ensuring proper tooling for each machine. Selecting, aligning, and securing holding fixtures, cutting tools, and attachments, accessories, and materials on CNC machines. Setting up and operating machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data in accordance with setup time parameters. Calculating and setting controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed coolant flow and depth and angle of cut or enter commands to retrieve input or edit computerized control media. Setting up and operating CNC Hobbing, Shaping and Shaving machines. 2. Ensures all parts are to the required specifications by: Maintaining and continuously improving the quality of parts produced. Reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Verifying conformance of finished work piece specifications. Complying with all work instructions. Following and maintaining ISO and Schafer procedures. Completing Schafer's quality certification requirements for assigned area. 3. Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by: Conducting all assigned and necessary preventative maintenance procedures. Starting and observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. Working with maintenance as needed on machines and equipment and testing operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance. Conferring with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems. 4. Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by: Maintaining and continuously improving productivity of assigned machines. Measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining. If applicable. Continuously looking at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools. Reducing downtime of machines setups Maintaining the 5S program in assigned area. 5. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by: Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution. Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures. Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed. Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements. Resolving problems. Performing other job-related duties as required. Helping evaluate job applicant's knowledge for the cell prior to Schafer hiring. Passing along vital information in the logbook for subsequent shifts. Training new personnel in the operation of assigned machines. Assisting and/or training in other gear - hob - shave areas as needed. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc. Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner. Two-year certification from technical school or two plus years of experience. Must be able to communicate in English. Ability to use a computer. Working Conditions: Air conditioned/heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise; dust; fumes; physical, chemical, and biohazards; solvents, oils, and detergents.
