Ensure that technology projects and programs forming part of specific internal client portfolios are completed on time and on budget. WSP is currently initiating a search for a Principal Project Director/Project Manager, Rail with a focus on our efforts in the Pacific Northwest . The person selected can be assigned to any of WSP’s 4 offices located across Washington and NW Oregon ( Seattle, Tacoma/Federal Way, Vancouver WA or Portland, OR ). This position is to pursue and deliver major rail projects in all phases of delivery, from planning and design, through program and construction management. The right candidate will be a highly experienced client-focused and dynamic seller-doer and leader in the various types of passenger rail modes (i.e. high speed rail, light rail, metro) with experience covering a broad range of operational and service planning, safety & security, systems engineering, rail ROW and infrastructure, and new technologies. This individual must also be a team-builder, who is able to work with and respect all types of individuals, organizations and situations to navigate and lead a team through all elements of project delivery.


Your Impact
  • Manage major transit and passenger rail programs/projects as a project director/manager, including delivery and project team management, contract administration and contract supervision

  • Accountable for overall management and successful execution of engineering projects within the engineering discipline, monitoring internal and external events, expenses, performance, and profitability.

  • Provide proactive and strategic process and people leadership for the design, implementation, and administration of the planning and engineering discipline’s project and program execution, promoting a robust awareness of the function’s, expertise and capabilities throughout the company.

  • Support and empower matrixed staff and direct reports to execute projects on time and on budget

  • Liaise with Transit and Rail National Business Line, clients, consultants, regulatory agencies, and major project stakeholders, and contractors.

  • Serve as the company’s transit and passenger rail engineering discipline subject matter expert to a variety of internal / external entities including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Clients, Subcontractors, industry-related groups, and various government and community entities.

  • Develop extensive high-level business contacts and client base for providing high level transit and passenger rail engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities, and cross-selling of other WSP capabilities.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.

  • 17+ years of relevant post education experience in planning, engineering and program delivery, prior transit and rail experience, and infrastructure delivery on billion $ + projects

  • Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).

  • Advanced proficiency with transit and passenger rail engineering principles, practices, process, both tradition and design/build delivery, standard of care, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.

  • Strong working knowledge of FRA, FTA, CPUC, AREMA, and other rail regulatory standards and procedures, codes, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements, and the business impact upon our clients and the organization.

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to manage a large span of control while effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interacting with employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Strategic lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment.

  • Demonstrate a high level of organizational agility to gain the support and cooperation of executive management, clients, and key stakeholders.
