Job Summary
A Construction Laborer - Underground Pipelines will perform tasks involving physical labor at underground projects for McGuire & Hester. May operate hand and power tools for all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, remove asbestos, lead, and other hazardous waste materials if appropriately trained and certified.

Typical Duties
Must be consistently at work on time, follow instructions, responds to management direction, commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals and complete tasks on time or proposes an alternative plan to appropriate person
Observe safety and security procedures and uses equipment and materials properly
Install sewer, water, and storm drainpipes using pipe laying machinery and laser guidance equipment
Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes
Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards if appropriately trained and certified
Control traffic passing near, in, and around work zones
Tend pumps, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools, machinery, and certified
The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, and carry objects up to 50lbs of weight
Perform general physical activities that may include climbing, lifting, balance, walking, stopping, or kneeling. This job requires standing, kneeling, and bending for long periods of time
Use either control mechanisms or direct contact to operate machines or process
Monitor and review information from materials, events, or the environment to detect or assess problems
Maintain a safety-first culture and actively participate in the “Safety Buck” program

Typical Duties
Focuses on delivering the highest possible level of quality on all projects. Assure quality control and workmanship for assigned construction activities
Maintain close working relationships with the Superintendent and Project manager to ensure proper coordination of the project. Preplan work activities with the Project Manager or Superintendent to develop the best means and methods, including safety action plans
Develop defined activities for specific scopes of work
Identify “problem areas” early in the process and develop strategies to overcome obstacles
Communicate and coordinate with the onsite owner and subcontractors as necessary to ensure proper sequencing
Ensure that all resources including safety equipment, tools, materials, equipment, and layout information are on the project and in site when needed and that is being used correctly
Complete daily set-ups for dispatch
Conduct daily jobsite Hazard Analysis
Conduct and document “daily huddle” with the crew to review production goals, performance feedback, safety, schedule and, to solicit feedback from the workers
Ensure that the company safety program is enforced. Ensure safety compliance with all predetermined, communicated safety guidelines for all field personnel under your supervision
Maintain equipment logs
Communicate and document daily construction activities including site conditions, main items of work performed, materials delivered, trucking utilized, subcontractors on site, cost code time for all labor and equipment utilized, and any significant problems or concerns that affect the operations of the project or company as a whole
Internally help foster an efficient productive environment with co-workers
Mentor and train field personnel under your supervision and help them to develop the skills and techniques that promote professional development

Qualifications

The Role

Typical Duties
Recognize positive safety habits and practices, analyze job site conditions for hazards, and create bid to allow for implementation of best practices that ensure worker safety and safety compliance
For each bidding assignment acquire plans, specifications, soil reports, historical bid files, and historical job cost information necessary to perform a detailed estimate. Coordinate needed quantity takeoff with the Takeoff Manager and/or takeoff engineers
Coordinate and mentor the assigned takeoff engineer to ensure takeoff is performed correctly and efficiently
Have a through understanding of the plans and specifications
Prepare a synopsis of pertinent or unusual requirements; determine construction method, personnel, and equipment required and provide coordination for the estimating team for the specific project
Solicit subcontractor and material quotes as required and maintain documentation for al good faith efforts in accordance with specifications
Develop a preliminary schedule to determine the length of time necessary for pricing for general conditions
Understand all aspects of the bid proposal including pricing based on labor productivity, crew types, and listed requirements
Perform the preparation of detailed estimates. Assemble information for each bid into organized bid packages and files
Complete estimate in a timely manner with ample time to review with the assigned reviewer
Post bid, schedule, and review entire estimate with the operations team
Alert operations team to special conditions at the pre-job handoff meeting
Attend project close-out meeting with the Project Manager
Work with the operations team to develop scope of work to be reviewed with the subcontractors and participate in subcontractor scope review meetings
Travel to jobs in progress to review how the construction estimate compared to the actual construction processes and costs
Assist operations team with change order pricing as needed
Focus on delivery of high-quality projects
Demonstrate a working knowledge of means and methods of construction
Support employee development activities and mentor less experienced team members
Meet all deadlines successfully
Maintain good client and business partner relationships

Qualifications
