Mechanical field engineer job description

The focus of this position will be to provide electric power generation service, industrial engine service, and service to the petroleum industry for our customers. The successful candidate must possess appropriate training and relevant work experience on electric power generation systems and industrial engines to successfully diagnose, repair, and complete technical startup of diesel and gas engines and generator sets, transfer switches, and switch gear; provide support for the oil and gas industry, to service natural gas and diesel products for our customers. Must possess appropriate training and relevant work experience on natural gas, diesel and industrial engine systems to successfully diagnose, repair, and complete technical startup of diesel and natural gas engines. After hours and weekend assignments are often required to satisfy customer demands and repair time schedules.
The essential functions of this position includes the following:

* Independently diagnose and repair prime power and stand-by electrical power installations in both multiple or parallel operation
* Understand and have a working knowledge of automatic start and stop controls, safety shut-downs, switch gear, circuit breakers, and control panel wiring
* Independently and successfully diagnose, repair, rebuild, and maintain diesel, gas, and marine engines
* Perform work on generators and component parts in various environmental and working conditions
* Safely assemble and disassemble equipment and component parts according to the manufacturer's specifications
* Repair and maintain temperature control and air compression equipment
* Independently diagnose and repair compression gas and diesel engines along with independently and successfully diagnose, repair, rebuild, and maintain diesel, gas, and marine engines
* Perform work on generators and component parts in various environmental and working conditions
* Safely assemble and disassemble equipment and component parts according to the manufacturer's specifications
* Repair and maintain temperature control and air compression equipment
* Accurately complete service reports and provide the details to complete work orders
* Meet the Department of Transportation physical examination and licensing requirements as mandated by law
* Work overtime as required and maintain tool requirements

When field electrical power generation or industrial engine work is available, the Mechanic will be dispatched to perform that work. When there is no field work, the successful candidate will work in the shop facility for the balance or duration of the shift.

This position requires a commercial driver's license. The successful candidate will be required to pass a driver's physical and all applicable tests associated with driving a service truck.

As a Field Mechanic you are required to work in an industrial environment which includes exposure to significant environmental conditions. Physical requirements include: overall stamina; sitting; standing; climbing; walking; lifting; pulling and/or pushing; carrying; grasping; reaching; stooping and crouching; listening; and speaking. Must have good motor coordination skills; coordination of eyes, hands, and feet; verbal intelligence; and numerical intelligence. The workplace environmental conditions include subject to noise; heat; cold; injury exposures; and atmospheric exposures. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Graduate of a technical school, military school, or relevant working experience acceptable to the company.

OverviewMechanical Engineer I is an entry level engineering position in the Mechanical Engineering Department. The Mechanical Engineer's main objective is to begin to understand how to apply the engineering skills obtained through their education to real world problems by assisting more experienced engineers on projects. # Project Overview

Bechtel is on the Northrop Grumman Corp. team preparing to deliver the U.S. Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) system of inter-continental ballistic missiles and launch infrastructure. GBSD is a vital U.S. Air Force program designed to modernize the nation's aging force of inter-continental ballistic missiles, which make up the ground element of the nuclear deterrent. As part of the Northrop Grumman GBSD nationwide team, Bechtel will provide launch system design, construction, and integration.

# Position Summary

Assigned to the Construction organization as a Mechanical Field Engineer and Subcontract Technical Representative (STR), reporting to the Project Field Engineer (PFE). Responsible for providing

engineering guidance to superintendents and craft personnel, assists personnel in meeting cost and time schedules, verifies materials, equipment, and workmanship. Ensures the construction results

meet specified design requirements. Performs various construction engineering assignments requiring a working knowledge of construction engineering practices. Also responsible for contract formation

activities that support the solicitation, evaluation, selection, and administration of subcontractors required for the execution of construction activities.

# Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

+ Determines the technical requirements for the piping and mechanical scope of work, and coordinates with Engineering on constructability issues.

+ Monitors work activities and ensures the technical adequacy and quality of the work performed.

+ Assists construction engineers and superintendents.

+ Interprets design drawings.

+ Monitors piping and mechanical equipment installation.

+ Plans for delivery of construction materials and equipment.

+ Ensures that proper warehousing and storage exists to ensure environmental protection.

+ Develops discipline construction work packages to ensure timely deliverables (material, inspection records, packages, etc.) to the field personnel.

+ Directs the preparation of quantity listings of field purchased material and equipment. Initiates requisitions for field purchases.

+ Supports the Piping and Mechanical Superintendent with the preparation of schedules, reports, forecasts, construction progress, and quantity verification while monitoring budget and developing

+ construction work processes to support piping and mechanical scopes of work.

+ Provides direct and timely support to General Foremen, Foremen, and Construction Professionals to assure that work progresses in accordance with the project schedule.

+ Prepares and coordinates technical change documents (field changes, etc.) with responsible engineers.

+ Reviews all piping and mechanical field engineering technical changes.

+ Demonstrates technical knowledge of pipe hydrotesting and pneumatic pipe testing processes and work steps, including the disassembly and re-instatement of pipe systems.

+ Defines the boundaries of a pressure test to be performed, identify the key elements that should be included in the pressure test plan, and identify safety hazards associated with the test.

+ Conducts the pipe pressure test by witnessing, verifying, accepting, and recording the test results.

+ Coordinates and resolves material/equipment issues with Procurement.

+ Participates in the preparation of construction drawings and schedules.

+ Executes the design of temporary construction facilities and ensures preparation of "as built" drawings and other job plans.

+ Reviews specifications, purchase orders, subcontracts, inspection reports, delivery schedules, instruction manuals and technical data to assist and advise on‑site.

+ Ensures the timely completion of construction records in support of Project turnover requirements.

+ Administers assigned subcontracts.

+ Coordinates with the appropriate site management on activities affecting the contract administration operation.

+ Supervises subcontractor work efforts and administers subcontract changes and interfaces with client personnel.

+ Facilitates the completion of subcontractor turnover documentation.

+ Reviews and/or supervises, as assigned, the preparation of construction estimates, cost engineering studies, schedules, and budgets.

+ Reviews project controls documents on progress relating to cost and schedule.

# Qualifications and Skills

**Basic Qualifications**

+ Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university and 3+ years of related professional experience, or 9+ years related experience in lieu of degree.

+ Must be a US citizen.

+ Possesses an active security clearance, or the ability to obtain security clearance.

+ Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check, including verification of employment and education.

+ Must be able to obtain a site security badge.

+ Must be physically able to conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs which may require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, using fall protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE), walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, and maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces.

+ This project may have multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime, weekends and/or night shift when a business need arises.

# Minimum Qualifications

+ Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.

+ Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe work ethic and work environment at all times.

+ Working knowledge of construction operations (including production and cost management, scheduling and forecast development).

+ Knowledge of the phases of project scoping, planning, and execution relating to the construction of multi-discipline works.

+ Working knowledge of the Bechtel Standard Work Processes Procedures (SWPPs) and the related Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) affiliated with piping and mechanical scope.

+ Motivated self-starter requiring little supervision and can work well in a team environment, on multiple work fronts, and with good communication skills.

+ Familiar with current industry quality standards such as ISO9001 or AS9100.

+ Good working knowledge of current piping and mechanical design codes and standards such as: IBC, SMACNA, ASME, NFPA, AWS, UPC, and others.

# Preferred Qualifications

+ Experience as a Mechanical Field Engineer.

+ Experience as a Subcontract Technical Representative, or equivalent.

+ Experience in project completion and turnover.

+ Knowledge of Bechtel's "Zero Accidents" safety program.

+ Prior experience with US Ground Based Missile Defense, Minuteman, or Peacekeeper weapons programs.

+ Knowledge and familiarity of the requirements outlined within the International Building Code (IBC).
