KQED morning news producer job description

KQED's local and statewide daily news teams are seeking experienced broadcast news editors and producers available to work on call to fill in for shifts that start as early as 4 a.m.

Successful candidates will have mid to senior level experience reporting, producing and editing for daily news broadcasts. Knowledge of Bay Area regional and California statewide issues is a huge plus.

Early morning editors and producers at KQED set the news coverage agenda for the day, and there is tremendous opportunity in these roles to create compelling journalism in both broadcast and digital formats.

These jobs involve considerable deadline pressure and multitasking. Successful candidates will be comfortable working in scenarios that require quickly weighing costs and benefits and making a decision. They should be comfortable coaching less experienced journalists through sometimes complicated assignments and debating reporting approaches with seasoned reporters. They should know how to make a decision quickly and be able to explain how and why they made it.

On-call journalists play a critical role filling a number of positions in the newsroom, learning new skills while working alongside other public media reporters, editors and managers. They often work inconsistent schedules and could work across various roles, including general assignment reporting, producing for radio programming, writing and producing content for our website and social media and producing for our podcasts.

KQED is a fast-paced news environment with daily deadlines. We are looking for people who love Bay Area and California news and have a strong sense of communities that are underrepresented. We're also looking for applicants who can think critically about the media's role in our democracy and region.

We strive to be intentional about employing talented journalists who can demonstrate cultural competency, who have familiarity with specific communities and who can find diverse sources.

KQED envisions a public media organization with a culture that centers on human dignity, equity, and belonging. This will enable us to better serve and reflect the Bay Area through diverse and inclusive storytelling.

We value the contributions of marginalized people in society - including Black, Indigenous, and all people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ people - and we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do, and we strongly encourage members of these communities to apply.
The mission that drives us:

KQED provide citizens of Northern California with a community-supported alternative to commercial media. We provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions; convene community dialogue; bring the arts to everyone and engage audiences to share their stories. We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The successful candidate will be required to join The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

Salary range for this position will be $35.78-$47.71 per hour.

Essential Functions:

* Write and edit broadcast news copy to be read by anchors and hosts live on air. Conduct phone interviews and file audio news reports as needed.
* Assign several stories daily to a rotating group of general assignment reporters, beat reporters and editors.
* Pitch radio two-ways, longer-term feature coverage, digital articles and talk show topics.
* Edit audio quickly and ensure that audio meets quality standards.
* Determine agenda-setting stories for Bay Area and statewide audiences.
* Communicate clearly and professionally with people in various roles, including reporters, news anchors, program hosts, audio engineers, announcers, producers and editors.
* Organize coverage among KQED partners, including NPR, other NPR member stations and other news organizations.
* Apply the highest journalistic standards and ethics to stories reported, aired and published by KQED.
* Coordinate with field reporters to troubleshoot and think creatively to solve any technical issues that may arise.
* Communicate professionally with sources, audience members and others who offer feedback on our journalism.

Other Job Functions:

* Report short-form and longer-form stories for radio broadcast and digital publication as shift demands or allows.
* Maintain standards and ensure compliance with newsroom policies.

Knowledge/Experience Required:

* Five years' experience in high-demand daily broadcast news editing and/or producing.
* Knowledge of Bay Area news, sources and major topics or a demonstrated ability to quickly establish editorial expertise in a new region.

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

* Speaking a language(s) other than English
* Experience reporting on underserved communities in the Bay Area
* Experience in digital or other multimedia journalism

Growth & Development Opportunities:

* On-call employees at KQED often have the opportunity to train for other roles in our newsroom, including digital news reporting and editing, engagement, podcast production and others.
