The project could last a few hours or a few weeks depending on what item they are assigned to. They could be working with material that is 2 feet long or 10 feet long. Most of the material they will be working with will be stainless steel with a little bit of aluminum and copper. Onsite there will be a CNC programmer so the inside machinist will need to have knowledge of G&M codes but does not need to have the programming knowledge. Once they finish one project, they will move on to the next project.

Perform standard pre-operational checks on assigned machines and notify facility PM technician for any issues with machine performance.

Qualifications
High school education or equivalent. Formal trade school, college, or military training school highly desired.
Mix of conventional and CNC machining experience, along with knowledge of GibbsCAM or other common CAD/CAM programs required. A minimum of 3 -5 years experience in prototype machining for mid-level, senior and/or master level consideration requires additional experience and will be discussed during the interview process.
Experience with 5-axis machines and processing of unique materials a plus.
Full command of various machining processes including milling, turning, grinding, and plating with an in-depth knowledge of materials including, but not limited to, carbon steel, aluminum, tool steel, stainless steel, composites, and fiberglass.
Skilled in mathematics required for machinists, also the ability to read a tape measure, micrometer, dial caliper, and all other measuring devices required by the Machinist Trade.
Forklift experience and/or 3D printing experience a plus.
Current Maryland Driver s License required; must be able to be insured through company s vehicle insurance policy while driving work/government/rental vehicles during working hours, and for the duration of employment.

Performs all duties of the Model Shop Specialist
Work in a team environment with engineering and supervisory personnel to troubleshoot and resolve design, equipment, and operating difficulties.
Supports the production machine shop by giving directions, suggestions and advice on best operational sequences or tools for the desired outcome.
Gain thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) thru provided classes. Train with CMM operator for understanding of tolerancing and positional accuracy.
Calculates and writes programs for conversational CNC work centers to fabricate component parts to stated engineering specifications.
Prints with tolerances and material callouts will usually be available. But walk-in work must be done from sample parts, sketches and may require going to the workstation to determine development of mechanisms and details without compromising the quality of the workstation.
Handle walk-ins to support a down machine or urgent job. This will require the planning of the repair a variety of tools and jigs with complicated nesting and locating features that are crucial for production and unique to each product line.
Participates in Kaizens like SMEDs
Develop working knowledge of machining characteristics of various materials and metals to pre-set cutting tools on the machine.
Develop the knowledge of how to adapt and/or improvise tooling where standard tooling is unavailable.
Develop general Metallurgy knowledge relating to the heat treatment of metals to produce desired hardness.

Education and Experience
Associate degree in Machine Technology or equivalent certification or 2 years minimum experience as Model Shop Specialist with Kollmorgen preferred.

Key Responsibilities:
Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.

We are currently recruiting several open CNC machinist positions for a rapidly growing operation at WOLF in St. Inigoes, MD. Senior- or Master-level machinists are preferred but we can also consider talented mid-level (3-5 yr+) artisans. Successful applicants will join a motivated team of Machinists at our St. Inigoes, MD facility, leading and performing all facets of machining, including programming, setup, and operation of top-of-the-line CNC mills and lathes, as well as occasional conventional machining operations.
The following job functions are basic requirements (but other duties may be assigned as well):
Program and operate 3- and 5-axis CNC mills, CNC lathes, and on occasion, conventional mills, lathes, and miscellaneous machine shop equipment to manufacture unique, one-of-a-kind products and systems to support NAWCAD WOLF projects.
Implement geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices to ensure all production products are manufactured to drawing specifications.
Maintain proficiency in the latest CAD/CAM (ex: GibbsCAM) capabilities through formal and informal company-provided training.
Work collaboratively with customers to understand project requirements and schedule, developing machining options, and translating customer requirements into functional hardware that meets all project specifications.
Actively train & mentor Junior Machinists and other shop personnel as needed.
Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
Follow and enforce all safety standards within the Machine Shop.
Plan and conduct work from blueprints, drawings, test plans, and aviation technical publications.
Must work well with others, as part of a team.
Perform standard pre-operational checks on assigned machines and notify facility PM technician for any issues with machine performance.
Fabricate unconventional, one-of-a-kind items, systems, or apparatus in support of experimental project test articles.
Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on assigned machines, as well as maintenance of tool inventories and procurement of equipment, supplies, tools, and consumables as required.
Other tasking, as required to support customer requirements.
Work Conditions:
Conditions will vary but most work will be performed in an active Machine Shop, so it can get loud.
Must be well-versed in safety protocols.
Position will include: 45% standing, 20% bending, 15% reaching, 5% sitting, 5% walking, and 10% lifting.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted.
Requirements:
Education/Experience/Skills:
High school education or equivalent.
Formal trade school, college, or military training school highly desired.
Mix of conventional and CNC machining experience, along with knowledge of GibbsCam or other common CAD/CAM programs required.
Full command of various machining processes including milling, turning, grinding, and plating.
An in-depth knowledge of materials including, but not limited to, carbon steel, aluminum, tool steel, stainless steel, composites, and fiberglass.
Skilled in mathematics required for machinists, also the ability to read a tape measure, micrometer, dial caliper, and all other measuring devices required by the Machinist Trade.
Forklift experience and/or 3D printing experience a plus.
Ability to train fellow employees on machine shop equipment and operations.
Current Driver's License required; must be able to be insured through company's vehicle insurance policy while driving work/government/rental vehicles during working hours, and for the duration of employment.
U.S. Citizenship required and you must already have or be able to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret Security Clearance
