The Role
Operate computer numerical control machines to fabricate parts. Loads parts in machine, cycles machine, detects malfunctions in machine operations such as worn or damaged cutting tools by performing the following duties.
What you will be responsible for:
Set up and operate numerical control machines or machining centers to perform various machine functions such as cutting, drilling, milling, reaming, boring, and broaching of metallic and nonmetallic work pieces.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, planning sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine tooling requirements, setup procedures, control settings, and machining methods and sequences.
Mount, align, and secure tooling, attachments, and work piece on machine using overhead crane.
Assemble cutting tools in tool holders and position tool holders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines.
Load control media such as tape, card, or disk, in machine controller or enters commands to retrieve preprogrammed instructions from database.
Capable of proper set up, interpretation and verification of correctness of program to be used on machine.
Calculate and set machine controls to position spindle in relationship to work piece and to regulate factors such as cutting depth, speed, feed, and coolant flow.
Manipulate controls and enter commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.
Ability to start machine and monitor displays and machine operation to detect malfunctions.
Observe and listen to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
Adjust machine feed and speed and change cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.
Measure work piece for conformance to specifications.
Stop machine to change cutting tools and setup according to required machining sequence or to measure parts for conformance to blueprint specifications.
Enter commands or manually adjust machine controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining.
Operate machine manually to perform functions when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions as applicable.
Notify supervisor of discrepancies. Discuss control media errors with supervisor or programming personnel to resolve problems.
Maintains production record of parts and jobs fabricated as required by the Department Manager.
Clean machine, tooling, and parts.
Perform some machine maintenance.
Regular attendance, ability to arrive at work punctually, ability to work on-site, ability to work overtime.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume and to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must be able to read and interpret tape measures, calipers and micrometers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (required levels)
High School Diploma or General Education degree (GED) preferred.
Minimum two years related experience or training.

Requirements
Responsibilities:
Machine Setup and Operation: Set up and operate manual lathes and mills (Monarch, LeBlond, vertical turret lathes, etc.) as well as CNC vertical mills (Haas, Honor, or similar), ensuring proper tooling, workholding, and part alignment.
Precision Machining: Machine components to tight tolerances - as tight as +/- 0.0005 inches - adjusting feeds, speeds, and tooling based on material requirements and part specifications.
CNC Programming & Edits: Perform in-console G/M-code edits, set offsets, verify toolpaths, and make simple programs from scratch when needed to ensure accuracy and repeatability.
Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret engineering drawings, prints, specifications, and GD&T to plan machining sequences and select appropriate tools and techniques.
Inspection & Quality Control: Measure and inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, indicators, and other precision tools to ensure adherence to specifications and high-quality workmanship.
Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve machining issues, make adjustments during setup or production, and collaborate with engineering when specialized solutions are required.
Process Optimization: Work with production and engineering teams to improve workflows, reduce downtime, enhance tooling strategies, and strengthen machining consistency across manual and CNC operations.
Workplace Organization: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment following 6S principles and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
Flexibility in a Job Shop: Transition between manual and CNC tasks efficiently in a high-mix, low-volume production setting, taking ownership of work from setup through final inspection.
Qualifications
Required
:
5+ years of machining experience
Proven experience as a Manual Machinist
Experience setting up and operating CNC mills
Experience with G/M-code programming or editing
Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, and GD&T
Skilled in precision measurement using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, etc.
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
Preferred:
Experience with large vertical or horizontal lathes, including VTLs
Background in custom, one-off, or low-volume machining environments
Equipment Familiarity:
Manual Machines: Monarch lathes, LeBlond Ltd lathes, and vertical turret lathes.
Inspection Tools: Micrometers, calipers, and precision measurement instruments.
Additional Equipment: CNC saws, riser welders, and spot-welding machines
