Responsibilities

The Orthopaedic Technician is responsible for providing assistance to patients and physicians in the full scope of Orthopaedic services. The duties involve specialized patient care tasks, including casting, dressing changes, measurement and fitting of Orthopaedic braces and other devices and ambulatory aids and patient education. Additionally, the technician will be required to complete routine patient care tasks so physicians and other clinic staff can attend to other clinical and administrative functions.Qualifications

Will accept current Medical Assistant with at least 6 months of full time casting experience or current graduate of an approved Orthopaedic Technician program.

High School graduate or equivalent.

At least 6 months of full-time work experience in a hospital, clinic or office setting working directly in the treatment of the Orthopaedic patient(s) preferred.

Working knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.

Ability to triage medical problems within scope of job responsibilities.

Hours:


Evenings- 2:00p to 10:30p

Under direction of Supervisor, Orthopaedic Technicians, this position is responsible for providing orthopaedic services to patients.

Removes and applies casts and supportive dressings.

Prepares, sets-up and applies traction and assists with the application of complicated orthopaedic procedures, i.e., Halos and K-wires.

Maintains, dispenses and orders supplies and equipment necessary to stock orthopaedic facilities to meet the needs of the seven basic areas serviced.

Manufactures orthopaedic items to specifications set by physician.

Assists physician with fracture reduction, setting dislocations and suture removal.

Distributes orthopaedic aids such as crutches and canes and instructs patients in their use and also maintains inventory of such orthopaedic equipment, in storage as well as in service.

Calls patient report to floor including work-up by physician and additional patient history and reports to the physician as to the extent of the injury.

Transports patients with cervical spine and femur fractures from Emergency Room to floor. Under direction of physician, orders X-ray series, post reduction films or repeat X-rays.

Prepares patients for sterile procedures involving joint aspirations, injections and minor surgery.

Performs routine procedures for admitting patients such as drawing blood, catheterizing male patients, electro-cardiograms and taking and recording of such vital signs as body temperature, blood pressure and pulse. Instructs patient in cast care, simple exercises, preventive measures, i.e., evaluation of affected extremity and proper body mechanics.

Harborview Medical Center's Hand, Foot, & Ankle clinic and Ortho/Trauma clinic have an outstanding opportunity for a per-diem Orthopedic Technician I, to work assisting with splinting, Casting and orthopedic procedures. This position may be split between the two clinics.

Patient Care Delivery

* Triage charts for scheduled patients in advance of appointment for diagnostic to be completed on day of clinic appointment to include completion of writing new x-ray request if appropriate. Pend imaging orders per clinical protocol.
* Obtain and document patient vital signs. Communicate with the RN if appropriate, for social, medical or educational concerns.
* Anticipates arrival of scheduled patients and completes intake tasks promptly.
* Monitors room lights, flags or other signals for indications of necessary patient care.
* Identify the paperwork requirements for the visit and communicate those needs with provider or appropriate staff. Fill out the paperwork as completely as possible for example: return to work, physical therapy, prescription(s), and nursing home forms.
* Determine the supplies and equipment needed for the patient visit.
* Ensure a signed physician order is completed before submitting the patient for an x-ray, remove and apply casts and/or splints, remove sutures as per established clinic orders.
* Complete tests as ordered by the provider including but not limited to venipunctures, specimen collection, ECG testing, orthostatic BP measurements.
* Apply, repair, remove and mend cast and appliances for clinic patients and document these procedures in the patient's medical record as per established clinic protocols. Provide patient teaching as appropriate and document teaching in the electronic medical record.
* Assess and evaluate cast problems.
* Provides patient education regarding cast care and mobility. Also makes post visit phone call for quality assurance.
* Set-up and assist orthopedic surgeon for minor procedure(s) to include pin and/or screw removal with use of fluroscan as per established clinic protocols. Provide patient teaching as appropriate and document teaching/care in the electronic medical record.
* Coordinate with other clinic and/or intradepartmental staff to ensure a smooth clinic flow.
* Make return to clinic appointment for patient(s) per established scheduling protocols and as needed coordinate transportation for the patient.
* Completes in-patient casting per order as needed
* Monitors patient flow throughout the clinic to assure efficient clinic operations.
* Other duties as assigned by Charge RN, Assistant Nurse Manager or Clinic Manager.

Clinic Operations

* Maintain a safe working environment in the exam rooms, cast room, and the clinic.
* Order Durable Medical Supplies (DME) and maintain inventory and stock per established clinic protocols.
* Participate in quality control checks and environment of care rounds.
* Maintain supplies in the exam rooms and cast room. Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of work rooms, and clean and dirty utility rooms.
* Understand role in an emergency.
* Assist in the orientation of new staff.
* Use computer resources as appropriate in connection with the administration of patient care.
* Use supplies in a cost-effective manner and assist with the management of clinic resources.
* Follow HIPPA regulations to insure privacy and appropriate sharing of patient information.
