PC WOW company history timeline

2006

Ahn’Qiraj was a raid released at the end of vanilla World of Warcraft in 2006, with a catch.

2008

Arriving with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion in 2008, the Death Knight was the game’s first new hero class and, for a while there, it felt like DK’s were all anyone was playing.

2009

Wrath of the Lich King sent players to Northrend and introduced the game’s first Hero Class, Death Knights who had broken their ties to the Lich King and started the game at level 55 out of 80. It would not be until Blizzard released Patch 3.3 in December of 2009 that the Lich King himself would be included in a raid.

2010

By May 2015, the game would have just 5.6 million active subscriptions. It is at this time that WoW’s subscriber count peaked, at around 12 million players in October of 2010.

2010’s Cataclysm expansion saw the terrifying dragon Deathwing escape the confines of Deepholm into Azeroth, leaving carnage and destruction in its wake.

2011

As of 2011, nearly 45 percent of all players are female, and the average age is 37.

2014

Though the lag feels like a distant memory now, Blizzard only gifted Australia with World of Warcraft servers of its own in 2014.

In 2015 WoW remained the world’s number one subscription‐based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

2020

WoW’s subscriber base nearly doubled between then and the start of 2020.

2022

The release date for version 2.0 of everyone's favorite World of Warcraft expansion has yet to be confirmed, but word is already out that the expansion is coming sometime in 2022.
