American Humane seeks an experienced animal welfare professional to serve are our new Farm Standards and Science Coordinator for the first and largest third-party farm animal welfare audit program in the nation, the American Humane Certified program. This position reports to both the Chief Veterinary Officer and the Director, Farm Program Operations. This a fully remote position that will involve some travel.

The Farm Standards and Science Coordinator is responsible for management, implementation, and development of standards and science for the first and largest third-party farm animal welfare audit program in the nation, the American Humane Certified program. The Coordinator provides advanced support for American Humane Certified producers and others in the animal agriculture and food industries and works with the Farm team on the American Humane Certified farm animal welfare standards and their implementation in field.

The person in this role seeks to ensure that sound and up-to-date scientifically based animal welfare standards and practices remain at the core of American Humane's Farm Certification Program. The Coordinator works collaboratively with and reports directly to the organization's Chief Veterinary Officer and the Director, Farm Program Operations.

In cooperation with program and senior leadership, the Farm Standards and Science Coordinator will contribute to large scale projects related to process improvement and strategic planning and growth of the farm program.
Responsibilities:
+ Maintain and manage American Humane Certified standards and related documents and communicate with American Humane Certified Producers regularly
+ Provide oversight regarding standards development, interpretation, and implementation
+ Manage day-to-day inquires, questions, and responses regarding our standards, interpretations of our standards, review and interpretation of research and science as it relates to our standards
+ Write reports, memos, and correspondence in response to questions regarding the American Humane Certified program and standards
+ Prepare and communicate technical information to internal and external stakeholders
+ Prepare and present information regarding current research and standards at industry events and trainings
+ Meet with producers and advisory scientists
+ Manage and engage the Farm Program Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and outside scientific advisors to ensure judicious use of their expertise, volunteer time, and energy
+ Ensure that animal welfare standards and guidelines reflect new research and technology; review regularly and in consultation with the SAC, make recommendations for revision of existing or the development of new standards as needed
+ Ensure that all scientific language and content in program and informational materials and web site are accurate and up to date
+ Monitor national and international farm animal health and welfare trends as well as legislative and regulatory activity and keeps senior management updated on emerging issues
+ Manage large scale projects as needed
+ Represent AHC at scientific meetings and workshops on animal welfare and farm animal science and research
+ Serve as a spokesperson for the Farm Program at conferences, trade shows, industry meetings and for other public speaking engagements, coordinating with the Director, Farm Program Operations
Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:
+ Advanced degree (including DVM/PhD/MS) in animal welfare, animal agriculture or related field preferred but not required
+ Diversity of experience in and understanding of some or all of the following fields preferred: agricultural animal health and welfare, agriculture industry (including allied groups), food supply chain, government (state or national), farm management, principles and practices associated with animal welfare including animal husbandry and/or agricultural or humane education
+ Knowledge or experience in the poultry, swine, dairy, and beef industries strongly desired
+ Successful program management experience, including managing standards, research, and/or auditing strongly desired
+ Demonstrated theoretical, technical and practical expertise in the animal welfare space
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills; active listening
+ Ability to translate complex, technical ideas/matters into easily understandable terms for a lay person or the general public
+ Adept at building collaborative relationships and demonstrating diplomacy with diverse constituencies, including farmers/ranchers, trade organizations, retailers, food services, and academics
+ Solid track record of building and maintaining professional relationships with clients and colleagues
+ Proficient in MS Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
+ Strong organizational skills

Job Description

Job Summary

The New Roots Farm Coordinator will build the capacity of the New Roots Urban Farm and Community Gardening Program through the development and facilitation of farmer training, acquisition of resources, day to day physical operations, production management, and volunteer coordination. The Farm Coordinator is directly responsible for management of New Roots farm sites and will coordinate farmer-participant activities and participation pertaining to all market outlets including the New Roots Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. The New Roots Farm Coordinator will oversee farmer technical assistance and training on organic and sustainable agricultural production, small scale production techniques, and irrigation management. The New Roots Farm Coordinator will be responsible for the oversight of physical resources, infrastructure, land management, and the facilitation of resource access for farmers. This position reports to the New Roots Program Manager.

Major Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Development and Maintenance

+ Maintain farming equipment and vehicles including tractor, implements, tiller, tools, irrigation systems, wash stations, including arranging for upkeep and tracking inventory.

+ Manage and maintain aquaponics greenhouse including tilapia production.

+ Develop and implement land management plans for New Roots farm sites including soil fertility, inputs, irrigation systems, apiculture, and composting.

+ Participate in total farm planning with other New Roots staff and New Roots farmers.

+ Implement farm and food safety plan and GHP/GAP compliance at New Roots farm sites.

+ Collaborate in land acquisition, development and preparation including soil remediation, infrastructure installation, and farm layout and irrigation.

Farmer Training and Technical Assistance

+ Collaborate with New Roots team to develop and oversee implementation of training materials on organic and sustainable agricultural production topics including crop planning, soil health, weed and pest management, irrigation management, post-harvest handling, and food safety,through regular workshop and one-on-one training and technical assistance.

+ Conduct regular visits to all partner farm sites.

+ Coordinate with New Roots partners to provide additional trainings and resources in land management, crop production, food safety, business development and marketing.

Program Monitoring

+ Track relevant production data for all New Roots farm sites including crop plans, harvest times and farmer sales.

+ Monitor soil fertility, including soil testing, addition of soil amendments, and tracking tillage and crop rotations.

+ Track aquaponics greenhouse production and harvest data as well as system maintenance including PH levels, system health, and tilapia sales.

+ Keep accurate case files and participant records for participating New Roots farmers, monitor and record skill acquisition.

+ Coordinate with New Roots Program Manager to collect and maintain relevant data for New Roots grant and donor deliverables; contribute to grant writing and reporting requirements.

Community Relations and Resource Development

+ Develop and maintain strong community partnerships including University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, Local First Arizona and Natural Resources Conservation Service.

+ Represent New Roots in the larger community through attending outreach events and by organizing events and volunteer days.

+ Work with New Roots Program Manager in fundraising, development activities, and resource acquisition of in-kind and monetary donations.

Additional Responsibilities

+ Support New Roots team through collaboration and participation in various New Roots PHX events and projects including seasonal markets, produce deliveries and urban farm and community gardening activities.

+ Comply with all IRC policies, procedures and protocols including adherence to the IRC Way and Child Safeguarding.

Education:

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:
