As a Production Operator at PPG's Monroeville Research & Development, you will be a crucial part of our Specialty Synthesis Group (SSG) operations responsible for process development and manufacturing of photochromic dyes, OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) materials and optical coatings, ensuring that a quality product is available to our customers when they need them. Location- Monroeville, PA
Rotating Shift: Work Schedule: 1st shift, Mon-Fri. (6:00 am - 2:00 pm) and 2nd shift, Mon-Thur. (2:00 pm - 12:00 am) Shift differential for 2nd shift. Shift Rotates every week.
Pay Rate: $47,150 annually, non-exempt + OT. Depending on skill(s) and experience higher rate of pay may be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Multi-step organic reactions in a plant environment (50 L to 400 L scale).
Running reactions/purifications according to batch sheet.
Modify batch sheets and other procedures as needed.
Collaborate effectively with variety of people with minimal supervision.
The position involves blending, measuring, and producing raw materials to manufacture industrial coatings.
You will work in a production environment with a high level of safety awareness and adhere to all appropriate safety procedures in place.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent.
Production and scale experience in a similar plant or laboratory environment.
Chemical and manufacturing experience preferred.
Exposure to some inorganic and organic college chemistry lab experience preferred.
Mechanical aptitude and high level of safety awareness.
Attention to detail and documentation skills and excellent organizational and communication skills.
Strong problem solving, initiative, and knowledge of PC applications.
Interpersonal skills, interact with all levels of organization, and able to work in a team environment.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a consistent basis throughout the day.

Perform operational tasks to meet project requirements, including forming, furnace and kiln loading/unloading, and maintain process equipment.

Disassemble, repair, and troubleshoot equipment.

Sets up machine for various size rolls as required by adjusting tail stock, head stock jaws, roll clamping, v-blocks, roller rest, indicate or layout, insert proper tape in tape reader, profile attachment, etc.
Sets up and operates machine tools, adjusting stops, feeds and speeds, numerical tape controls, etc., for operations being machined.
Checks and records forging or roll dimensions, stock and run out. Compare with print dimensions.
May operate tape control lathe under semi-automatic control.
Performs attendant functions as required in observing process under tape control.
Performs straight and taper turning, boring, threading, facing, drilling, tapping, reaming, plugging and mill work, etc., to the required dimensional specifications and tolerances.
Uses calipers, micrometers, scales, gauges, etc., to check for finish sizes.
May position and tighten roll plug as required.

Uses wheelbarrow or crane service to transport or handle tools, shop supplies and lubricants. May operate pendant control crane to move product or material as directed
Uses wrench, bar and pins and sledge to assist in installing or removing center plugs as directed or mounting grinding wheels
Assists in tearing down, piling and transferring rolls as directed
Loads and unloads trucks, either manually or uses crane service as required and blocks rolls or material as directed. May occasionally weigh rolls as instructed
Uses solvent and rags to clean painted or greased rolls as directed
Occasionally may use air hammer to break concrete as directed
Performs plant janitor service. Shovels snow, sweeps and cleans walks and roadways
Performs other miscellaneous clean up or labor work as directed

Sets up machine for various size rolls as required by adjusting tail stock, head stock jaws, roll clamping, v-blocks, roller rest, indicate or layout, insert proper tape in tape reader, profile attachment, etc.
Sets up and operates machine tools, adjusting stops, feeds and speeds, numerical tape controls, etc., for operations being machined.
Checks and records forging or roll dimensions, stock and run out. Compare with print dimensions.
May operate tape control lathe under semi-automatic control.
Performs attendant functions as required in observing process under tape control.
Performs straight and taper turning, boring, threading, facing, drilling, tapping, reaming, plugging and mill work, etc., to the required dimensional specifications and tolerances.

Receives detailed instructions from supervision.
Received parts to be machined and detailed drawings.
Verifies that raw material, drawing and tooling are in agreement with work order book from which they perform work.
Obtains drawings, tools, and materials as needed. Rebuilds, adjusts, changes, grinds and modifies tools as required, while maintain department tool inventory.
Sets up machine by installing and adjusting tools, positioning and aligning fixtures, parts, clamps, setting feeds and speeds.
Submits pieces on machine.
Positions pieces on machine.
Performs various turning, boring, facing, milling, keyway machining, polishing, etc., operations as specified or required.
Uses measuring devices and ensures accuracy of measuring devices and gages as required.
Burrs and polishes all parts to a final finished condition using hand tools and any specialized machines. Deburrs parts as required.
Adjusts, changes and dresses tools as required.
Grinds non “T” number tools from blanks as required.
Keeps machine, tools and workplace clean and in proper place and checks gages, flow meters, coolant strength, air filters etc.
