Job Summary
Plans, organizes, directs, & controls activities of personnel engaged in Environmental Services. Responsible for maintaining a clean and sanitary campus by developing and implementing current policies as well as a preventative and corrective cleaning program. Develop departmental training programs and budgets; prepare operating reports and statistical reports for various committees and outside agencies. Understand and stay in compliance with current codes and regulations related to safety, JCAHO and IDPH.
Job Duties
1. In consultation with superior and subordinate supervisory personnel, develops departmental short and long-term goals, and plans to accomplish agreed-upon goals.
2. Develops, secures approval of, and administers a departmental budget which provides for the necessary resources for attainment of agreed-upon goals in accordance with approved plans. Assist in preparation of Capital Plan as it relates to ‘Environmental Services’ requirements.
3. Formulates policy for the department and secures appropriate approvals. Develops and administers procedures necessary to implement approved policy and provides the overall direction necessary to provide efficient and timely services.
4. Hires, develops, evaluates, disciplines, and discharges subordinate personnel or makes authoritative recommendations in such matters; delegates such responsibility when appropriate.
5. Efficiently directs the operation of the Environmental Services department including daily cleaning, special projects, to maintain standards of cleanliness and has responsibility in assisting in prevention of cross infection.
6. Manages and maintains supply inventory within department guidelines and standards. Prepares Purchase Orders for supplies for approval. Interviews and selects vendors in cooperation with the Purchasing department to assure the best products, service and prices. Has specific responsibility for Pest Control, Waste Management and Window Washing.
7. Conducts daily rounds of facility to ensure compliance with hospital standards.
8. Maintains and directs the departments Quality Assurance Program monitor the performance of staff, to assure compliance to standards of the hospital, and regulatory agencies.
9. Maintains records related to work activities and services performed. Prepares and submits related reports.
10. Coordinates and schedules the work of outside vendors and subordinates in the completion of special cleaning projects as assigned. Communicates and schedules required work with other departments.
11. Provides for initial department training and orientation of new employees. Develops and maintains continuing education programs for employee development. Provides learning situations and opportunities for skill development of employees.
12. Develops and directs the preparation of departmental records as well as special and recurring reports and analyses ensuring that they are complete, accurate, and timely. Reviews and interprets these in order to ascertain the extent to which departmental goals are being attained; takes corrective action when necessary.
13. Communicates with other hospital managers to identify, analyze, and resolve issues relating to housekeeping and environmental services, and/or other identified issues as a collaborative effort.
14. Inspects and evaluates the physical condition of the hospital, recommend painting, repairs, and furnishings. Reports any unsafe conditions. Recommends relocation/space allocations to improve safety, sanitation, appearance and efficiency.
15. Participates as a member of the Infection Control Committee, Environment of Care Committee, and others as assigned.
16. Conforms to established People Relations Standards.
17. Participates actively in self-development by attending educational programs offered inside and outside of the hospital.
18. Follows a program for self-education and development by maintaining membership in appropriate professional education organizations, and reviews relevant literature. Continues development process in conjunction with departmental and hospital goals.
Job Qualifications
· College level degree preferred or the equivalent in practical experience.
· Five to Seven years of progressive supervisory experience and knowledgeable in the regulations and guidelines within a hospital environment.
· Knowledge of all phases of housekeeping techniques and related equipment
· Knowledge of JCAHO, and I.D.P.H. Codes & requirements
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
· Excellent financial analysis skills, strategic thinking and development skills
· Ability to read blueprints and specifications
