Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for an experienced assignment editor to work with its Health and Science team.

The successful candidate must have the ability to handle daily news, deliver high-end accountability and enterprise stories and work collaboratively within a large newsroom. This editor, who will handle a range of breaking and enterprise stories about health and science, should be able to explain complicated developments in simple ways while capturing the awe and wonder of scientific discoveries and innovations. We are also looking for someone with a desire to tell stories in innovative ways, especially drawing on the visual richness of health and science topics.

This editor, who will join a team of three other editors, will work an afternoon/evening shift and will play a pivotal role in shaping the team's coverage for the day ahead, including communicating with The Post's news hubs in Seoul and London about overnight news.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

In this role, the successful candidate will copyedit the questions and detailed explanations written by our teams of educators and specialists modeled on Advanced Placement (AP) exams in Statistics, Calculus, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science; SAT/ACT Math; the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT); and the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1.
About you:

You are a grammar aficionado intimate with every part of speech.

You have a unique ability to root out errors in dense manuscripts aimed for specialized audiences.

You have at least 2 years experience editing published educational material in Math and Sciences with observation of one or more detailed style guides.

You can easily switch between different subjects and multitask with the best.

You're a positive person that is able to stay highly motivated working independently.

You also understand collaboration is crucial to success. You can give constructive feedback and be diplomatic when writing queries or comments for content developers. And you can receive feedback with tact and use that to grow

You have at least a four-year degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.

You are disciplined and a motivated professional who is eager to learn and thrive while working with short turnarounds.

You have a demonstrated ability to write an interesting cover letter which specifically addresses these points.

You have started to notice the writing and editing missteps throughout this job post and can confidently address them in a cover letter or in a tracked changes version you would be willing to include with your application.

About the Job:

Technical/Quality Assurance (80%) Edit test questions and explanations for clearness of expression, grammatical slipups, logical flaws, uniformity of design, and adherence to company style guides in materials related to SAT/ACT, AP, MCAT, and USMLE

Edit material, including illustrations and tables, for punctuation, redundancy, clarity, consistency of style, and repetitiveness

Consult and collaborate (20%): Provide suggestions to authors and other editors for substantive changes

Helping to establish style and format guides for a variety of editing projects

Cooperate with other departments (10%): Edit related materials in marketing and recruiting as needed

Ability to take pride in work and give 110% effort.

Please note:

Without editing experience, teachers, lab scientists, physicians, writers, and statisticians will not be considered.

This position is located at our beautiful offices in Dallas, TX.
