15 senior assistant scientist skills for your resume and career

1. Occupational Therapy

Here's how senior assistant scientists use occupational therapy:
  • Provided occupational therapy to participants of the PACE program
  • Transport patients to and from the occupational therapy work area.

2. Assays

Here's how senior assistant scientists use assays:
  • Performed high-throughput compound screening using cell-based assays of filamentous fungi and yeast with robotic instrumentation.
  • Trained on the Media team to learn how to make media and pour plates for the plate based assays.

3. Sops

A standard operating procedure or simply SOP is a particular operation that needs to be done in accordance with the rules and guidelines of a company or an industry. It is an important way for a company to run smoothly, especially in small businesses. It is like a practice wherein everything an individual or an employee is under a particular standard that is implemented.

Here's how senior assistant scientists use sops:
  • Initiated and conducted lab investigation reports (LIR) and quality assurance reports (QAR) pertinent to company SOPs.
  • Create datasheets, update SOPs during periodic review and mentor colleagues on testing methods and instrument usage.

4. R

R is a free software environment and a language used by programmers for statistical computing. The R programming language is famously used for data analysis by data scientists.

Here's how senior assistant scientists use r:
  • Designed R-statistical algorithms and wrote R codes to develop numerical regression.
  • Design experiments and build predictive response surface models to optimize drug product quality attributes using SAS, R and JMP.

5. HPLC

Here's how senior assistant scientists use hplc:
  • Performed troubleshot and maintained HPLC, UV/Vis Chemstation, worked on lab investigations and Peak Pro software.
  • Developed and performed methods for analysis of radio labeled organic pesticides through extensive HPLC and Liquid Scintillation techniques usage.

6. Analytical Balances

Here's how senior assistant scientists use analytical balances:
  • Organize daily tasks to maintain productivity Collect data using standard measuring equipment and analytical balances

7. Data Analysis

Here's how senior assistant scientists use data analysis:
  • Performed research and data analysis to support the work of the University Registrar.
  • Responded to customer inquiries for data analysis and offered guidance for better usage of biochemical/ kits products to improve customer satisfaction.

8. GLP

GLP stands for "good laboratory practice." This refers to the integrity and quality measures that non-clinical laboratories have in place to ensure accurate research and market testing. GLP is most often used in pharmaceutical companies where new drugs must be tested before being approved for sale, but the practice can also be used in food packaging and preparation test centers.

Here's how senior assistant scientists use glp:
  • Performed Study Directing and Study Monitoring Responsibilities per GLP regulations.
  • Miss Meyer conducted pharmacological binding studies for GLP studies.

9. Adaptive Equipment

Any tool, device, or machine that is for the purpose of improving or assisting in daily living is called adaptive equipment. These devices are generally used by people that have short or long-term disabilities.

Here's how senior assistant scientists use adaptive equipment:
  • Demonstrate compensatory strategies and use of adaptive equipment.
  • Instructed clients in the proper use of adaptive equipment, transfers, and energy conservation and joint protection techniques.

10. Laboratory Investigations

Here's how senior assistant scientists use laboratory investigations:
  • Assist other colleagues with laboratory investigations, training of other analysts as assigned.
  • Conduct laboratory investigations and write reports.

11. Lims

A LIMS - Laboratory Information Management System is a software solution to improve laboratory productivity and efficiency with modern support of laboratory operations to address the challenges of data and sample management, automation, and regulation of laboratories from around the world and thus maintaining workflows and standardized testing and reporting procedures.

Here's how senior assistant scientists use lims:
  • Managed sample inventory via in-house laboratory information management system (LIMS) and implemented additional systems for sample and chemical organization.
  • Prepared necessary solutions and materials required in the performance of specified tests Recorded and reported data into LIMS accurately

12. OTR/L

Here's how senior assistant scientists use otr/l:
  • Write progress notes and IEP reports to present under supervision of OTR/L.

13. FDA

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services that regulates the production and sale of food, pharmaceutical products, medical equipment, and other consumer goods, as well as veterinary medicine. The FDA is now in charge of overseeing the manufacture of products like vaccines, allergy treatments, and beauty products.

Here's how senior assistant scientists use fda:
  • Developed & implemented internal reporting procedure for FDA ARs.
  • Aided in starting up a new microbiology laboratory and expanded clean room manufacturing facility with successful FDA approval.

14. GMP

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practice. It is a system that ensures that all products like food, beverages, and medicinal drugs that are produced comply with the quality standards. It helps in minimizing the risks and hazards that cannot be eliminated after the testing of final products.

Here's how senior assistant scientists use gmp:
  • Developed and performed release and stability testing of proteins under GMP regulations.
  • Address internal and external audit concerns within the laboratory and ensure laboratory compliance to produce minimal safety and GMP regulation observations.

15. Data Collection

Data collection means to analyze and collect all the necessary information. It helps in carrying out research and in storing important and necessary information. The most important goal of data collection is to gather the information that is rich and accurate for statistical analysis.

Here's how senior assistant scientists use data collection:
  • Managed operation and validation of computer systems used in Reproductive Toxicology resulting in increased efficiency in data collection and analysis.
  • Develop, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory-centralized data collection and organizational process for observations and numerical model output.

What technical skills for a senior assistant scientist stand out to employers?

Dr. Joey Neilsen

Assistant Professor, Villanova University

I think programming skills and data analysis/statistics are especially valuable right now, while data science is so big. Our students take a year of Computational Physics in Python, and we integrate Python into some of our upper-level courses and labs as well. Our recent graduates, both in academia and the private sector, report using those skills on a regular basis. Two other skills that US Physics graduates report using regularly are technical problem solving and technical writing. This makes lots of sense from an employer perspective: you want to hire people who can identify and solve problems and then clearly explain the solution to your team. This is a great reason to let those lab reports shine!
