The job of a senior computer engineer is pivotal to most business environments. Computer engineers test, design, and maintain computer software and hardware. As a senior computer engineer, you are to make sure that all the software programming components and physical hardware parts function smoothly.

To do this, you must have a deep understanding of computer systems and understand how to recognize any hardware limitations that could impact software design. Because technology develops every day at a fast pace, senior computer engineers need to stay abreast of the latest developments in hardware, software systems, and coding.

Note that an effective senior computer engineer must possess a passion for problem-solving. If you wish to excel at this job, you must know data structures and algorithms. For employment, a degree in computer engineering, mathematics, or related fields is vital. Also, you must understand high-class programming languages like Java or Scala. That being said, the average Senior computer engineer salary is $111,800.

What general advice would you give to a senior computer engineer?

One of my main advice for Computer Engineering students is that they should get hands-on experience as much as possible through various courses comprising labs and projects. In order to excel in this field, it is imperative for the students not only to learn the fundamentals but also to get hands-on experience. Also, as professors and educators, we are here to help students to get through their coursework and degree program successfully. Therefore, I would encourage students to have an open dialogue with their professors/instructors, and not to hesitate on approaching them with any concerns/problems encountered during the courses or degree program. My advice is not to get deterred by the years that you have to spend or some of the difficult courses that you have to take, instead consider this as a journey that you are taking to enhance your life and career.
