Summary/Objective


Completely and independently set-up and operate computerized numerically controlled machine tools to perform a series of machine operations on blind fastener components to close and exacting tolerances and finish per designated specifications. Troubleshoots and resolves problems related to CNC machined parts.


Essential Functions


Under general direction with periodic supervision or review performs the following:

1. Sets up CNC machines making required adjustments to tooling, collets, etc. Running machines with chucker automatic load systems. Troubleshoots and resolves various problems related to the set-up and operation of tooling, work holding etc. of an auto loading CNC machine tool.

2. Read and interpret drawings, programs, and other documentation to visualize machining required and sequence of operations.

3. Makes input to CNC consistent with set up procedure. Fills out Setup Card for preset or setup of tools to be used in operation of CNC machine. Performs dry run to verify setup prior to production run. Recognizes and reports errors n programming and operations. Collaborates with appropriate personnel in correcting errors.

4. Provides necessary counts, processes documentation correctly, and maintains daily production logs or production worksheets.

5. Utilizes SPC techniques and methods to ensure workflow efficiency.

6. Maintains SYMIX database accuracy by recording work progress in a timely and efficient manner.

7. Works as an active team member by participating in problem solving, team building, and all other team activities to improve the processes, productivity, quality, etc. of the production operations. Uses interpersonal skills as well as good written and verbal communications. Assist other employees as required.


EDUCATION/TRAINING


Demonstrated ability to read and write English of a level required in Company shop documents. Must demonstrate and be capable of applying mathematical operations using fractions, decimals, trigonometry and geometry as required by machining operations. Generally equivalent to journeyman trade school graduate. Demonstrate math and English proficiency through Company testing as required.


EXPERIENCE


Requires 3-5 years work experience or equivalent skills and knowledge expertise in the set - up and operation of Computerized Numerical Control machines, tools and equipment which are similar or comparable to those used by the Company and which are necessary to fulfill job requirements. Must have demonstrated the capability to set - up and operate the CNC machines required to the level of journeyman. Must be familiar with and capable of using Statistical Process Control. Must read precision measuring instruments such as comparators, indicator, calipers and micrometers. May be required to perform other jobs as needed by the Company.


Equipment/Process Responsibilities
- Performs duties where significant property, tools, equipment or machines may be damaged, or man-hours lost, through improper daily maintenance and attention to processing. Inputs set-ups and maintains CNC machines for the jobs performed. Performs Total Productive Maintenance as required.


Material or Product Responsibilities
- Performs duties that require close attention to work and supporting documentations specifications and other requirements. Responsible for accuracy of parts formed. Visually and / or with measuring instruments, checks work performed for proper results. Responsibility for Work of Others - After setup, continues responsibility for job order accuracy and productivity during production run. Accuracy of communication is mandatory to the successful production and qualification of workpieces. Must communicate to appropriate personnel any problems or concerns regarding quality of work received or time flow of work in progress as it affects production schedules. Must be able to train employees of equal of lower classification in CNC machine set-up and operation as well as on methods and procedures used by the Company in the production workflow and tracking. Communicates primarily with CNC employees including programmer and supervisor.


Safety Responsibilities
- Good housekeeping, knowledge of good machine safety is necessary as well as adherence to and enforcement of Company Safety Rules.


Initiative and Ingenuity
- Requires initiative in solving problems associated with the programming, setup and operation of CNC machines and ingenuity in adapting tooling and shop aids to complete operations. Makes suggestions for improving the efficiency of work flow or equipment operation. Troubleshoots and resolves CNC related problems. Takes on or reports for additional work as w\current tasks are completed. Performs other work-related tasks, as deemed necessary by Company needs.

Position Overview

The Senior Machinist/Model Maker will support Manufacturing and Engineering and will be responsible for designing, fabricating and repairing production jigs & fixtures as well as custom machining of precision prototype components.

Duties and Responsibilities

+ B alance of workload to support manufacturing and engineering. Design, build and validate jigs and fixtures as well as working with engineering to implement and fabricate new prototype machined components.

+ Proficient and experienced with the set-up, safe operation and day-to-day maintenance of manual mills, lathes and surface grinding equipment.

+ Reads and understands blueprints as required to create and build new fixtures, tools, and machined components.

+ Operation of machining equipment as required, to ensure a quality product is produced within specifications.

+ Uses tools to build fixtures; creates and constructs new fixtures.

+ Repairs tools when needed; disassembles jigs, tools, and fixtures, then reassembles when repaired.

+ Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software. Ability to use CAD software to create designs and/or turn designs into blueprints is a plus.

+ Inspects completed tools for signs of imperfection or damage that may affect functionality.

+ Maintains a safe, clean, and well-organized workspace.

+ Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience

+ Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

+ Thorough understanding of machining and tooling needed to work with: tool steels, aluminum, Delrin and various other construction materials.

+ Working understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra.

+ Ability to use basic measurement gages and inspection equipment to validate machining accuracy

+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

+ Ability to work independently and with engineers and machinists.

+ Proficient with computer-aided design (CAD) software.

+ Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

+ On-the job training available.

* Sets up, operates and adjusts numerically controlled single or multiple tooling milling machines using all forms of control media, program documents, holding fixtures and cutting tools and/or by manually operating or entering any required data to machine to quality requirements, this includes new technology associated with equipment, as well as working with exotic materials and processes associated with day-to-day activities.

* Uses technical skills and abilities to work in Proto-type environments with limited supervision instructions or direction.

* Obtains information from drawings, documents, machine control media, sketches and verbal information with limited amount of supervision.

* Makes preparations and adjustment to ready machine for operation; included but not limited to, working with suppliers of new technology type mills and equipment.

* Makes adjustments during machining cycles and as authorized, install various types of cutting tools to obtain desired results.

* Uses precision measuring instruments, gauges and tools to dimensionally check cutting tools and/or parts for conformance to prints and specifications; as well as special or new technology associated with this task understand dimensioning and tolerancing per AUSI 414.5

* As required, assists planners or programmers to determine the final numeric control program; includes but not limited to, coordinating with suppliers of new technology type mills and equipment.
* Mounts and checks cutting tools in holders and properly hand load in magazine or spindles.
* Initiates requests for corrective action when malfunctions occur and detect faulty tools and take corrective action in conformance with shop practice and procedures.
* Loads, preludes and manually positions fixtures at designated program stops.
* Maintains licenses, permits and certifications required to perform assigned work.
* Performs other duties as assigned within general job classification.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Security Clearance and Export Control Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship. A Final U.S. secret clearance and/or final U.S. secret clearance Post Start is required

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

* Minimum of High School Diploma or GED.
* Experience working with detailed work instructions or reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings.
* More than 1 year of experience with 5-Axis & 3-Axis NC/CNC Milling Machine.
* More than 1 year of experience with metal parts numerical control (NC) programming.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

* More than 3 years of experience setting up and operating Conventional Lathes, Mills, and Surface Grinders and Numerical Control (NC) equipment.
* More than 3 years of experience in setting and using precision measuring tools and equipment such as micrometers, calipers, and/or dial indicators.
* More than 3 years of experience setting up NC/CNC machines, including probing and using dial indicators to establish set points.
* Experience programming and editing NC/CNC controls using "G" codes.
* More than 3 years of experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GD&T).
* More than 3 years of experience programming in Surfcam or equivalent (CAD/ CAM software)

Typical Education / Experience (for non management and hourly):

Associate degree in aerospace or equivalent combination of education and experience.
