Senior scientist, product development job description

• A minimum of 5 years of related experience with a consumer-packaged goods background; experience with cookie/cracker unit operations is a preferred.

• Product Development/Baking emphasis; preferably someone who has successfully commercialized baked products in the market.

• Experience in chips, pretzels, extruded snacks, bars, bread, pasta, and other snacks are also relevant.

• Excellent analytical skills, strong attention to details, good communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to handle and lead multiple projects at any given time in a team environment.

• Passion for food science and product development.

• Ability to think beyond their own (R&D) function to consider the organization and its purpose holistically.

Working Conditions:

• Anticipated travel of up to 30% which may include the following:

• World Headquarters (WHQ) Office, manufacturing plants, vendors

• A portion of the job occurs in a bakery, thus the work exposes the employee to heat and hot food products, coolers, and freezers requiring the use of personal protective equipment.

• Ability to walk/stand up at times for up to ¾ of the workday.

• Physical ability to handle weights of up to approximately thirty pounds.

• Handle allergens including dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, eggs and other food ingredient chemicals and allergens while wearing appropriate PPE.

• Willingness and ability to taste and evaluate a wide range of food products and ingredients.

YOUR ROLE

•Is part of a highly motivated, international cross-functional team in the field of electromagnetic interference
•Identifies product requirements and solutions for current and future automotive applications at global top tier 1 suppliers in the field of EMI
•Uses own profound understanding of the customer needs for EMI solutions and translates these into innovative, best in class products.
•Influences emerging industry standards for automotive ADAS and EMI applications
•Develops strategic partnerships with suppliers, start-ups and external research organizations to stay current on the latest EMI technology trends and how they could be leveraged into new automotive applications.

YOUR SKILLS

•BS/MS (or equivalent experience) in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
•PhD (or equivalent experience) in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Electrical Engineering preferred
•Comprehensive knowledge in EMI filler technology and its function in the final formulation and interaction with the chemical network
•Experience in formulating EMI materials, e.g. conductive elastomers, EMI absorbers preferred
•Proven track record of commercialized state-of the-art material solutions for EMI absorption and shielding.
•Understanding of product applications and testing criteria needed for current and future automotive applications.
•Ideally, recognized within industry as being an EMI technical expert.
•Demonstrated knowledge of product offerings, industry trends and ongoing research.
•Previous experience in Automotive ADAS applications preferred.
•Strong team spirit, appreciation of an agile working environment and ability to lead by example

Responsible for partnering with BJ's suppliers to develop technical solutions to create, renovate and innovate member-centric Own Brand products. Works with a cross functional Own Brand team (comprised of Own Brand Management, Sourcing, Packaging Design and Quality) to execute a roadmap of projects that deliver top and bottom line Own Brand growth. Accountable for defining the key product sensory and technical attributes that meet our members' needs and uphold our brand standards through the creation and management of product specifications.
Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

+ Partners with the Own Brand Manager to understand the strategic initiatives of the business and implement supporting technical solutions in partnership with BJ's suppliers

+ Performs technical and trend benchmarking to define critical vs optional product attributes to engineer the right product quality at the best cost

+ Defines a roadmap of opportunities for quality engineering to deliver value to our members and profitability for BJs. Evaluates product through the development process and provides feedback to BJ's suppliers.

+ Partners with BJ's suppliers to document the product specification for each product in BJ's portfolio

+ Defines research and testing needs to meet or exceed product quality hurdle rates through the product development process

+ Leads product cuttings to demonstrate technical and sensory performance of products and make recommendations for the product to the cross functional team

+ Manages the product portfolio to deliver on the technical requirements of the brand positioning and principles

+ Influences the Own Brand cross functional team with a strong understanding of the interactions among product, processes and packaging to deliver consistent and strong product quality

+ Leads the product commercialization phase of product development with BJ's suppliers and validates finished products achieve goals

+ Monitors and manages on-going product quality to ensure products remain competitive and initiates continuous improvement projects when opportunities arise

Qualifications

+ Food, personal care and/or household product development experience - including formulation, understanding of cost drivers, ingredient interactions and technical feasibility

+ Track record of driving exceptional results in a cross functional environment

+ Sensory evaluation experience or knowledge

+ Working knowledge of product manufacturing (CPG experience desired)

+ Passion for products and quality

+ Strong curiosity, problem solving and strategic thinking skills

Education Requirements
