The Senior Technical Architect is an expert in their field, tasked with the design, creation, and installment of IT systems. They also act as mentors and guides to team members and other technical architects.

They are also meant to overview and modify the work of others, organize and run workshops, create their own designs, work on large projects, which in and on itself requires them to cooperate with IT managers, software developers, and fellow experts in order to understand the span of the project and what it needs to deliver on and what issues it needs to fix. The Architect also needs to deal with the troubleshooting and other problems, as they come up, and stay in touch with clients and companies for whom the work is already done to ensure that no other issues have come up since completion.

A good Senior Technical Architect generally has a Bachelor's, or even a Master's, in IT or Computer Science, or a similar subject, years of previous experience, and in-depth knowledge and expertise on computer networks, hardware, and IT systems. They will also have proficiency in one or more programming languages and operating systems.

What general advice would you give to a senior technical architect?

Christy Graves

Professor/Program Manager, Seminole State College of Florida

I would advise the graduate to learn from everyone they work with within the workplace environment. Even though a degree in architectural engineering technology is valuable, it's impossible to learn everything you need to know to be successful in the industry by taking classes in school and earning a degree. Do not be afraid to ask others for help when you aren't sure about the task you've been assigned to do. In addition, keep up with new technology. Remember, learning should be a lifetime pursuit. It shouldn't end with earning a degree.
