Lyon Shipyard shipfitter helper job description

Fitters must have strong math skills and a good mechanical aptitude. Fitters build in-place all interior structures, hatches, doors, bulkheads, etc., to complete all the steel work in the ship. Fitters are expected to climb and work in high areas or crawl and work in cramped confine spaces and perform tasks with all kinds of working conditions in-between. A fitter will apply their skills in the shops, platens, dry-docks and onboard ships in support of, ship repair and ship overhauls. Master, 1st, 2nd and 3rd class levels are based on proficiency, knowledge, skills and abilities. This job description applies to all positions listed below:

• Structural Shop


Duties and responsibilities

1. Fitters must have strong math skills and a good mechanical aptitude

2. Fitters build in-place all interior structures, hatches, doors, bulkheads, etc., to complete all the steel work in the ship

3. Fitters are expected to climb and work in high areas or crawl and work in cramped confine spaces and perform tasks with all kinds of working conditions in-between

4. will apply their skills in the shops, platens, dry-docks and onboard ships in support of, ship repair and ship overhauls

5. Performs safe and effective use of craft related tools and equipment, including but not limited to: millers, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, come along and chain falls etc.

6. Obtain GMAW ABS ‘B’ Class Weld Certification for aluminum applications.

7. Performs basic layout of plates, materials and weldments using basic engineering sketches, drawings, and diagrams with minimal supervision.

8. Performs shipfitting functions such as but not limited to fit up of structure, cutting, sniping, sanding, grinding, prepping, tacking and the fit up of plates with minimum supervision.

9. Performs fitting operations with limited supervision using standard shipfitting equipment to accomplish fabrication and ship repair duties.

10. Monitors working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations.

11. Must be willing to work with and train lower-skilled workers.

12. Knowledge in burning basic use of torch/light torch); make up plating (align, fit) and knowledge of plating material (CuNi- Copper nickel, Aluminum, stainless steel) ; blueprint (reading, interpret) including sketching; tack welding; portable plasma arc; lay out access cuts and inserts; tank inspections/testing; certifications in SMAW, FCAW or FCA

13. Receives instructions, prints, and work orders for the job.

14. Plans details of working procedures and tools and material requirements.

15. Fabricates equipment by cutting, burning, and tack welding various metals.

16. Cleans and prepares surfaces to be welded. Sets up, assembles, and tacks weld parts.

17. Uses burning equipment to dismantle assemblies and to cut material to size and shape.

18. May be assigned to dismantle or cut up obsolete machinery, setting aside parts for scrap dealer.

Work Environment

Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.

Physical Demands

Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although periodic out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

**Job Family:** SCA

High School diploma and/or a technical vocational high school diploma; 2 years of shipboard experience

Shipfitter: Lays out and fabricates metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them in position within hull of ship for riveting or welding: Lays out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using scribe and hand tools. Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines. Positions parts in hull of ship, assisted by RIGGER (ship-boat mfg.). Aligns parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls. Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting. Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips. May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts. May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding. May roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, using shop machinery, such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines.

+ Mechanic: Remove, repair, overhaul, install and align main propulsion machinery and associated equipment/components. Also remove, repair, overhaul, install and align equipment associated with auxiliary systems such as condensers, compressors, pumps, forced draft blowers, main feed pumps, various types of valves, cargo handling machinery, anchor handling gear, boat davits, cranes, elevators, conveyors, firefighting equipment, machine shop equipment, galley, and laundry equipment. Install and repair foundations for operating machinery and principal structures/components of ship's armament. Install, adjust, set, and repair or replaces various control/regulating or safety devices such as meters, gages, valves, governors and automatic alarms. Test or assist in testing of shipboard machinery pier side or on sea trials to prove satisfactory operation and acceptance. Use various portable and fixed machine tools such as boring bars, milling machines, facing machines and drill presses. Use precision measuring instruments such as height gages, depth gages, calipers, verniers, various types of micrometers, and assists in the use of optical equipment. Coordinate and arrange for the work of several trades in connection with performing work from information received from technical work documents, blueprints, specifications, written and/or oral instructions. Engineer, steam, machinist, installation, marine erector, marine machinist, outfitter, outside-installation machinist Installs ship machinery, for example propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gear, working from blueprints and using hand tools, calipers, and micrometers. Lays out passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces for connections, for example shafting and steam lines. Installs below-deck auxiliaries, for example evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers and connects them to steampipe systems. Tests and inspects installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.

You will be one of the lucky personnel to be a team member that makes up the premier Northeast builder of double-hulled barges, tugboats, ferries, aluminum CTVs and other vessels. Some of the team members have been with us for over 20 years and take pride when our vessels are launched and delivered to their respected owners.

This position is located at Quonset Point in North Kingstown, R.I.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • 3 years of experience in a shipyard or fabrication shop.
  • Achieve 80% on written ship fitter exam.
  • Must be able to tack weld using the SMAW process.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, kneel, squat, walk, sit, or stoop. Full range of motion.
  • Must have correctable vision to 20/40.
  • Must have own tools, and be skilled in their use, including but not limited to: 25 foot tape measure, 50 foot tape measure, plumb bob, square, adjustable square, bevel square, 18 inch level, 2 pound ball peen hammer, 5 pound sludge hammer, 12 inch adjustable wrench, weld shield, flash light, and chalk line.
