    Forestry Technician The Holden Arboretum Non-Exempt, Full-Time Opportunity: Holden Forests & Gardens seeks a Forestry Technician to support the Working Woods program across three primary focus areas: assistance to consulting foresters, land management of our 70+ acre demonstration forest, and support for education and outreach initiatives. Consulting Forestry Support: This role will assist consulting foresters with tasks such as field surveys, mapping, site visits, report preparation, and data entry. Land Management: The technician will conduct on-the-ground stewardship activities, including invasive species control, trail maintenance, cultivation of non-timber forest products and other demonstration site upkeep. The technician will also coordinate volunteers to help with these activities. Education and Outreach: The technician will contribute to the delivery of public programming by supporting workshops, guided walks, classes, community tabling events, and other outreach activities. Position Details: Non-Exempt, Full-Time Role Limited Time position through June 2027 Key Responsibilities of the Forestry Technician include but are not limited to: Implement invasive species management through manual, mechanical, and chemical control methods Assist with planting and establishment of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species Maintain and improve forest trails for accessibility, safety, and demonstration purposes in the Working Woods Learning Forest Monitor and maintain demonstration areas as needed. Tasks may include watering, weeding, planting, etc Support seasonal land stewardship activities across varied weather conditions and terrain with staff or volunteer help Assists with site visits, forest assessments, and forest management reports for landowners Assist with administrative tasks relating to consulting forestry business such as writing quotes and database entry Assist with field tours, workshops, seminars, and tabling events Present to public and professional audiences at conferences, symposia, and workshops as needed Collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, contractors, and partners to support Working Woods Hub and landowner goals Participate in organizational planning and special event committees as appropriate Work independently on diverse tasks and meets deadlines Communicate clearly and concisely to the general public Appreciation for the importance of the work of arboreta, public gardens, and museums Maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable vehicle record May provide occasional on-site support at the Cleveland Botanical Garden campus or throughout NE Ohio Qualifications and Skills: Demonstrate a passion for people, nature, and the environment with interest in working outdoors year-round performing manual labor in all weather conditions Knowledge of forest conservation, forestry, and climate change action with a clear understanding of those issues and their relationships to forests, forestry, and natural resource management Associate or bachelor's degree in forestry, forest science, natural resource management, biology or related field 2 years' experience with forestry, natural resource management or a related field, preferred Pesticide Applicator License or ability to obtain certification within 1 year of hire, highly desired Comfort with equipment such as brush cutters and chain saws or ability to become so, preferred Experience working with landowners, preferred Highly organized and able to coordinate multiple ongoing projects simultaneously A good communicator who enjoys engaging with people Knowledge of ArcGIS (Pro), GPS data loggers, and/or other database systems desired Proficient use of Microsoft 365 products, specifically Teams, Outlook (email and calendar), Word, Excel, SharePoint, and OneDrive Experience and willingness to work collaboratively as a part of a team as well as independently Observe all safety protocols and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for positions and/or specific activities Report any hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to your supervisor Physical Requirements Communicate over the telephone, in person, and electronically Reliable transportation and ability to attend meetings and events within the state of Ohio and occasionally beyond Able to drive long hour(s) and distances to conduct site visits Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions Capable of walking long distances and navigating rough terrain and hills Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies as needed up to 30 lbs Travel by foot on unpaved or uneven terrain to transport oneself to various locations on arboretum property Ability to reach, kneel, bend and twist at waist, bend at knees, crouch, see, touch, grasp objects, push, and pull Some of the reasons Holden Forests & Gardens (HF&G) is a great place to work!
