Somerville Public Schools company history timeline

1852

Somerville Free High School opened in 1852.

1872

The high school opened in 1872 a new high school.

1895

Somerville English High School opened in 1895 and still stands as the Central Wing, or B Building, of the current high school.

1910

Boys' Vocational High School opened in 1910.

1911

In 1911, the twin schools merge to become Somerville High School.

Girls' Vocational High School opened in 1911.

1914

Beginning in 1914, the junior high school was created from Forster Elementary School seventh and eighth grades.

1924

By 1924, Somerville had three junior high schools.

1929

In 1929, the Somerville Latin School was torn down to build the East Wing.

1983

By 1983, all three junior high schools were closed.

1988

In 1988, a construction project makes it a comprehensive high school.

2004

Quinones has been at SHS since 2004.

2008

Kersten also founded the school’s Ultimate Frisbee program in 2008 and still helps out with the teams when she can.

Blake has taught full time at SHS since 2008.

2012

O'Connor has taught at SHS since 2012.

2013

Contreras began his career at SHS in 2013 as a Special Education teacher working with the Social Studies Department in a co-teaching model.

2017

Ensdorf came to SHS in the fall of 2017.

2020

She has been teaching at SHS since 2020.

2021

Hennessey began teaching at Somerville High School in 2021.
