Coordinate with administrative and medical staff to guarantee the availability and timely delivery of ultrasound services. The sonographers within KU's OB/GYN MFM Department are leading the region with their practices. Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including: positions patients for the proper view of the affected area; selects the appropriate scan images to be recorded; obtains essential information from patients, medical records and previous scans for clinical correlation. Instructs patients about the proper physiological requirements for the procedure; helps patient transfer to exam table and ensures adequate patient immobilization to perform the scan; knows how to change scanning parameters to improve a scan. Obtains diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient with the transducer; provides documentation of ultrasound exam sufficient for physicians to interpret. Days- 7am - 7:30pm The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer utilizes high frequency sound waves (diagnostic ultrasound) along with color and spectral Doppler ultrasound to assist in the diagnosis of a variety of conditions and diseases. The sonographer is responsible for producing dynamic and static visual images of internal structures, analyses of hemodynamics of vasculature and communicating findings to the interpreting radiologist. Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations, using cognitive sonographic skills to identify, document, and adapt examinations as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images and to use independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings and communicates findings to the interpreting radiologist. Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients. Introduces self to patient, properly identifies patient utilizing two identifiers, explains the sonographic examination being performed and answers any patient questions; assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient while they are in the sonographer's care; notifies appropriate personnel if assistance is needed. Selects and operates a wide variety of imaging equipment in an efficient and safe manner, coordinates examinations in the most efficient order and perform exams in a sequence which minimizes the patient's stay in the hospital. Maintains working order of the equipment and completes daily and weekly QC as required; reports equipment malfunctions to the supervisor in a timely manner. Interacts with physicians and other technical staff to provide quality, safe and efficient care for the patient. Maintains cleanliness and supply par levels of all rotational areas, empties laundry, follows eye wash station protocol and policy, and utilizes high level disinfection (HLD) according to health system policy directed by Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilization policy. Provides instruction to sonography technical students, medical students and residents regarding sonography exams and equipment when appropriate; coordinates with ancillary personnel as needed. Assists supervisor with divisional paperwork as assigned. Responsible for completion of mandatory educational assignments as provided by the supervisor. Title Cardiac / Cardiovascular Sonographer I Bell Hospital / Career Interest: Cardiac sonographers provide professional, safe and compassionate ultrasound imaging care to all patient populations. They are uniquely trained in the advanced understanding of ultrasound physics and instrumentation allowing them to optimize the ultrasound controls for the highest quality image acquisition. The sonographer is able to identify and evaluate the appropriate anatomical and physiological consequences consistent with different disease processes. They need to be able to adapt the routine protocol to a wide range of patients and disease-state variability, making each exam individual and unique. The sonographer manages the initiation of critical value notification to expedite optimal patient outcomes. Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions * Obtains a patient history and perform a pre ultrasound procedure assessment. The sonographer must utilize their professional knowledge to verify that the exam ordered is consistent with the patient history, indication and/or diagnosis and assessment findings. In the presence of any inconsistencies they clarify the procedure with the ordering physician. They interact and communicate with patients; explaining the procedure, reassuring them and eliciting their cooperation as needed. * Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of the patients while they are under their care. At the KU location the sonographer completes appropriate TEE probe cleaning and disinfecting. * Performs professional, clinical and technical competencies of assigned location, but not limited to assigned shifts and be readily available when scheduled to perform on-call echocardiographic services as assigned to provide emergent echocardiographic services under the direction of a cardiologist. * Demonstrates the ability to identify and evaluate the appropriate anatomical and physiological consequences that would be consistent with disease processes. The sonographer needs to be able to adapt the routine protocol to accommodate a wide range of patients and disease-states, making each exam individual and unique. Any additional enhancements that would provide beneficial information are initiated with the sonographer unless otherwise noted by the ordering physician. * Demonstrates both cognitive and psychomotor skill sets in the area of cardiovascular disease states. These skill sets are necessary to accurately and efficiently obtain the appropriate echocardiographic ultrasound images and hemodynamic information as appropriate. * Organizes the acquired data in the appropriate sequence that will accurately represent the patient's condition to the interpreting physician. In the presence of critical values, the sonographer must display competence in identifying, documenting and communicating this to the interpreting physician. Working closely with the interpreting physician in interpretive sessions, assisting in the evaluation of data and contributing relevant technical information. * In accordance with the departmental QI program, the sonographer must provide quality, constructive feedback on peer-to-peer case study review as assigned; return QI studies to the technical director or their designee in a timely manner. * Assists in maintaining efficient patient flow through the department, working as an active participant with the other members of the team. * Responsible for completion of mandatory educational assignments as outlined by the departmental director. * Participates in the education and training of sonographer students, residents, medical students and fellows, providing instruction in the area of cardiovascular ultrasound procedures. * Assess the need for ultrasound enhancing agent (UEA) and bubble studies during echocardiography studies. Administer and properly document IVs, UEA, and bubble studies when performed. * Assists with the assessment and maintenance of the equipment log.
