South Florida State College company history timeline
A special welcome was extended to alumni and former staff and faculty members, many of whom helped establish the college in 1965.
In 1965, the college was founded as South Florida Junior College.
On August 22, 1966, FJC held its first day of classes at two renovated, temporary facilities: the Southside Campus at South Jacksonville Elementary School on Flagler Street and the Cumberland Campus on Cumberland Road off Roosevelt Boulevard.
When SFSC’s first classes began on August 21, 1966, the college offered an associate in arts degree.
As of the summer of 1966, an empty supermarket became known as a college library, classes were held in a former hotel, and a movie theatre parking lot was available to SFJC students, employees, and visitors.
Two short years later, in May of 1968, the College held its first Commencement ceremony at the Civic Auditorium.
In 1968, the college became fully accredited by the state, the first junior college to gain full accreditation in less than three years.
Doctor Bernard Francis Sliger became Interim President on Doctor Marshall's resignation, and on February 7, 1977, the Board of Regents named Doctor Sliger President.
In January 1984, Doctor Stallard retired as president, and Doctor Richard Morley was named interim president.
In March 1984, the District Board of Trustees renamed the college South Florida Community College.
In late 1984, the DeSoto and Lake Placid centers of the college were opened.
FJC reached a big milestone in 1986 as it registered its 500,000th student and changed its name from Florida Junior College to Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) in response to community input and engagement.
In 1988, the Hotel Jacaranda was acquired.
On March 11, 1991, Doctor Dale W. Lick was designated to succeed Doctor Sliger as president on August 1, 1991.
In 1992, SFSC became one of the first community colleges in Florida to offer bachelor’s degree programs through partnerships with public and private universities.
Telecourses were first offered in 1992.
After Doctor Lick's resignation on August 31, 1993, Doctor Sliger was again named Interim President.
In 1993, the Public Service Academy was opened.
In 1999, the Crews Center was opened.
In 2002, the Museum of Florida Art and Culture and the University Center, which houses the college's bachelor's and advanced degree programs, were opened.
A new campus was built in 2003 with much more space.
In 2003, the Dental Education Center opened.
SFCC commissioned artist and SFCC alumnus Keith Goodson to create a three-panel mural on the cylindrical cooling tower in the center of the Highlands Campus after the hurricanes of 2004 had ravaged the cooling tower’s facade.
The next class of students began in January 2005, staggering it with the traditional fall start of the Highlands Campus LPN program.
The year 2005 saw the creation of the Office of National Fellowships, which had immediate success in increasing the numbers of undergraduates who received nationally and internationally prominent scholarships and fellowships.
The National Science Foundation announces that USF ranks 63rd among the nation's top research universities, according to a survey of federally financed research and development expenditures at universities and colleges in 2006.
The mural, called the Tower of Enlightenment, depicts various aspects of SFCC and its mission. It was dedicated in a ceremony on March 27, 2007 and now serves as a centerpiece for the Highlands Campus.
Classes began at the Health and Science Education Center (HSC). After five years of planning, SFCC concluded construction of the facility on June 29, 2007 and dedicated its $12 million HSC on Oct.
Health and Science Education Center was opened for classes in fall 2007.
President Wetherell announced his retirement on June 17, 2009.
Eric J. Barron took office as Florida State's 14th president in February 2010.
On July 1, 2012, the college officially changed its name to South Florida State College.
In the 2014 edition of the United States News & World Report’s Best Colleges, USF is ranked 14th as an ‘up and coming’ university among the country’s national universities.
During an Avon Park City Council meeting, City Council members delivered a proclamation declaring July 7, 2015 South Florida State College 50th Anniversary Day.
Since 2015, USF has climbed 44 spots from No.
The University of South Florida ranks among the nation’s top 50 best values in public higher education for 2016, according to a new list by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.
After 19 years at the helm of the university, President Genshaft will retire effective July 1, 2019.
