Job Summary and Responsibilities
Job Summary:
Performs efficient and meticulous decontamination/sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment, as well as inspecting and assembling surgical instruments, equipment, trays, and packs according to prescribed protocols and industry standards for aseptic technique. Depending on the assigned hospital, incumbents rotate assignments among various decontamination sterilization processing, surgical tray assembly, supply and distribution functions in a continually changing medical and surgical facility. Work also includes: 1) tray assembly, 2) assisting in recordkeeping and monitoring equipment operations, 3) maintaining department inventory and 4) identifying and reporting supply, equipment, and procedure problems and 5) dispensing equipment and supplies.
Incumbents are also accountable for demonstrating awareness of personal and work area safety at all times; using evidence-based practices (EBP) and complying with facility safety policies and procedures in carrying out duties including those for blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases and; keeping knowledge current on aseptic techniques and basic microbiology sufficient to understand the ways diseases and infections are transmitted and the importance of clean and sterile supplies in patient care; attending training in new and improved sterilization practices and developments in the microbiology, bacteriology, and therapeutic practices as they affect the sterile supply operation.
Essential Duties:
Collects and decontaminates and cleans reusable equipment and/or supplies and associated storage units in accordance with department, manufacturer, and OSHA standards.
Assembles instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items and kits by selecting the appropriate items, trays, instruments, and arrange them in the correct manner permitting effective sterilization using existing standard operating procedures and surgical case count sheets.
Sterilizes equipment in accordance with department, manufacturer, and OSHA standards using different agents, which may include steam, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, ethylene oxide, and glutaraldehyde.
Performs periodic tests on autoclave effectiveness and maintains accurate sterilization records.

Education & Experience:
Graduation from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management Course (preferred) and one year of related work experience that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge skills/abilities, preferably in an operating room, acute care hospital or central services department preferred.

Effectively perform flexible endoscope repair tasks:
Level 1 Tasks: Minor repairs, replacements and refurbishing, e.g.-replace Bending rubbers, replace C-Covers, E/C clean, clear A/W and Auxiliary System, reseal ports, minor and major angulation, variable stiffness adjustment, distal negative lens replacement, polish lenses, diagnose and repair video control system, biohazard cleaning, read and produce diagrams, learn and operate data management program.
Level 2 Tasks: Intermediate repairs, replacements and refurbishing, e.g.-create repair drawings for level 1 and 2 repairs, perform quality control inspections on level 1 and 2 repairs, perform precision soldering tasks, replace suctions channels, replace biopsy channels, replace air water channel channels, adjust and reseal control knobs system, rebuild control knobs, clean eyepieces, replace complete video guide lenses cartridge, clean angulation systems, realign internal components, rewire E/C's, replace light guide tubes, perform Ocular rebuilds.
Level 3 Tasks: Major repairs, replacements and refurbishing, e.g.-create repair drawings for level 1, 2, and 3 repairs, formally document and develop improvements to the repair process, perform quality control inspections for all scopes, train new employees, perform overhauls on Olympus, Pentax, ACMI, Stryker, Storz and Machida Endoscopes.
Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; and instructing supervisors on the need for repairs.
Perform preventative maintenance and daily lab set-up tasks; such as checking the output intensity of the UV spot curing lamp, setting up the leak testing station, and setting up the video / light output testing equipment.
Perform all form, fit, functional, quality, and performance tests on all repairs.
Upon completing repairs, provide a complete outgoing inspection. Update paperwork with the repairs performed and correctly enter into M2M all issued inventory parts.
Demonstrate ability to read, understand, administer, and manage data entry into production-related software, such as Made 2 Manage is critical.
Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating repair-related information, needed actions, and possible irregularities.
Provide, engage in, and initiate Lean Six-Sigma ideas, goals and visions for continuous improvement programs.
