The ideal candidate will have broad experience working with freight railroads and public agencies, preferably in CA & the Western US. The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local standards and requirements associated with railway projects, design, operations, and maintenance and an understanding of project delivery processes for various phases of project development such as planning, conceptual design and feasibility, environmental documentation, preparation of Plans, Specifications, and Estimate (PS&E), and providing Design Support During Construction (DSDC) and Construction Management (CM). The ideal candidate will also act as a seller-doer project manager that leads project pursuits and helps grow market share, through cooperation with the Freight Rail Market Sector Leader and the business development and marketing team. HDR is currently seeking to hire a Control Systems Engineer to join our Building Engineering Services (BES) Business Group in Folsom or Walnut Creek, CA. This individual's primary function will be to serve on a team in a project leadership role in support of our national Control Systems practice which includes full-service capabilities. Our practice provides assessment, planning, design, automation programming/configuration, testing & commissioning, and maintenance for control systems in multiple industries. The Control Systems Specialist / Engineer will work under the direction of a Senior Control Systems Specialist / Engineer as part of a team responsible for designing complex industrial and building control and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. This position requires coordination with multidiscipline design teams, and participation in the development of control system construction documents for projects in multiple market sectors including oil & gas; food & beverage; logistics; manufacturing; mining; general industrial, transportation, technology, media & telecom, healthcare, research, life sciences; and water/wastewater. This individual should be self-motivated with attention to detail and an initiative to deliver high quality, technically sound control system designs. In the role of Control Systems Engineer, we'll count on you to: * Perform complex assignments exercising judgment in evaluation, selection and modification of standard engineering techniques and procedures * Coordinate workload through design development and construction document phases to complete documents on schedule * Conduct systems integration of the SCADA systems, including programming of PLCs/PCs and HMI customizing for various control software programs * Review electrical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines * Write and edit instrumentation and controls systems specifications, and select equipment and monitoring/control devices * Develop biddable and technically accurate SCADA / I&C construction documents including P&IDs, network architecture diagrams, control panel layouts and wiring diagrams, installation details, loop drawings, and technical specifications. * Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, CPRs and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents * Make decisions on significant design and engineering procedures as needed * Function as a Technical Specialist or Project Manager on mid-size projects as needed, but project management is not the sole focus of this position * Supervise a small staff of professionals and technicians as needed * Provide construction contract administration as needed * Selection and specification of process instrumentation, control panels, and network equipment * Production and development of biddable and technically accurate control system construction documents including P&IDs, network architecture diagrams, control panel layouts and wiring diagrams, installation details, loop drawings, operational sequences and technical specifications. * Coordinating the work of control system team members with the full multi-discipline project team throughout a project's design development and construction - including site layout, process design, mechanical control, power and conduit coordination, panel location, remote equipment monitoring, integration to 3rd party systems, networking, and instrumentation location * Developing Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programs and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) applications * Participate in design review and planning meetings with the client. * Reviewing supplier submittals, responding to RFIs, conducting Field Observations on construction sites and developing reports. * Establishing and maintaining client relationships, participate in marketing, design, and production meetings regarding instrumentation and control systems. * Utilizing CADD software including the following products: AutoCAD, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft Visio. * Manage workload to complete tasks on schedule. * Reporting project status, performance, and quality updates to the Control Systems Section Manager. * Perform other duties as needed. The position will participate in and provide oversight to a variety of project types, including the following: planning, design, inspection and construction management of interior drainage and riverine flood risk management projects; dams and reservoirs; ecosystem restoration; drainage; and general site civil of major water management infrastructure. The SW Regional BC Lead will coordinate, on a regional basis, projects with inter-related disciplines such as hydrology, hydraulics, structural, geology, geotechnical, civil, mechanical, CADD and GIS. The position will also require coordination with HDR's other regional and corporate business class technical leads (BC Practice Leads, etc.) and advisors. The position will also be expected to reinforce the Quality Management Program (QMP) and participate in staff training, as needed. As a SW Regional BC Lead, you will participate in the corporate management of the DLCWs program. Work assignments may include technical and quality reviews of projects outside of your geographic area. HDR utilizes a robust workshare program, and it is common and expected that work is shared across the HDR network between our operational areas. You will be coordinating with regional operations management as well as corporate business class leadership. As requested by the DLCWs BC Director, you may be requested to review work scopes or work products to make sure they include appropriate limitations and assumptions.
