Overview


BJC Home Care offers patients and their families a complete range of home care services, including skilled nursing services, adult and pediatric hospice and supportive care, rehabilitation therapy, home infusion therapy, infusion treatment rooms, home medical equipment and high-tech respiratory care. Specialty home care programs also are available, including adult and pediatric asthma, cardiac, diabetes, orthopedic and wound care programs.


BJC Home Care provides care to thousands of patients in both Missouri and Illinois. Serving more than 25 counties, it has become the largest home care network in the region and one of the largest in the country.

The Home Infusion Therapy Department of BJC Home Care Services works closely with physicians, patients and caregivers to enable patients to remain or return home while receiving intravenous medications. Our services include 24 hour on-call pharmacy and nursing services, comprehensive patient education materials, patient assessment and drug administration monitoring, and coordination of professional services including home care nursing and laboratory services.

Role Purpose

The Vascular Access Specialist coordinates the business, administrative, and operational functions necessary to achieve successful outcomes related to the care provided for specialty medication patients. This positions performs direct patient care and functions as a clinical resource for issues related to vascular access devices for the nursing, pharmacy, and other support staff. This position also supports the operational functions of the department as related to the ambulatory infusion suites, staff education, and regulatory compliance

Responsibilities

  • Develops, maintains, and revises the policies and procedures guiding all aspects of the operation of the ambulatory infusion suites.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in the placement, maintenance, troubleshooting, and de-clotting of intravenous catheters as well as in the administration of specialty medications.
  • Assists in developing the policies and procedures related to the safe administration of specialty medications.
  • Participates in nursing orientation, the development & administration of training, and competency validation for the nursing staff.
  • Educates patients and family members about specialty medication infusions, potential adverse reactions, and post discharge care; administers specialty medications according to physician orders.

Supports pharmacy department infusion and sterile compounding operations

Detailed responsibilities:

* Prepares sterile compounded preparations, including specialty and complex drug preparations such as total parenteral nutrition and chemotherapy.

* Gathers, packages and coordinates shipments and returns of supplies and equipment required for medication administration including but not limited to durable medical equipment, drugs, tubing, flushes, disposal containers etc. based on departmental needs

* Performs confirmation of product NDC, quantity used and manufacturer to ensure accuracy with billing and reimbursement

* Assists with maintenance of USP environmental monitoring per regulatory guidelines

* Assists with supply and drug inventory management, including inventory system up keeping.
