Summary:
The High-Risk OB Ultrasound Tech specializes in performing invasive and non-invasive obstetric and gynecological ultrasound procedures to assist in diagnosing and managing high-risk pregnancies. They ensure accurate, high-quality imaging, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and provide detailed findings to consulting providers while prioritizing patient education, safety, and comfort.
Essential Work Functions:
Assist in implementing and adjusting patient treatment plans under the guidance of physicians or RRTs
Examine and interview patients with breathing and/or cardiopulmonary disorders
Perform diagnostics tests, such as measuring lung capacity or collecting blood/sputum samples
Administer respiratory treatments, including aerosol medications and oxygen therapy
Set up and monitor equipment to ensure the patient is receiving the correct amount of oxygen at the correct rate
Observe and record patient status and progress
Educate patients and/or family members on how to properly take medication and use equipment
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of CRT practice
Required Essential Skills:

Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills

Key Responsibilities
Supervision of Ultrasound staff
Coordinates the work assigned to each area and monitors the work of the staff: Develops and assigns daily schedule of assigned personnel and ensures accurate record keeping.
Observes and assists technical and ancillary staff in the performance of job duties, including providing suggestions for improved work efficiency and quality.
Performs preparation of control and quality control and assessment tasks (QA/QC).
Ensures the department delivers quality services, in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards, to support operational excellence.
Serves as the Clinical Coordinator for Ultrasound students.
Evaluation and Implementation of Appropriate Care
After reviewing all pertinent data and assessing the patient's abilities and condition, selects the most appropriate patient care plan.
Uses professional judgment to adapt imaging procedures to ensure quality diagnostic outcomes.
Evaluates lab values prior to performing any interventional procedure.
Able to recognize significant clinical information and historical facts, from the patient and from the medical record, which may impact the examination.
Assesses factors that may contraindicate the procedure, such as medications or insufficient patient preparation.
Reconfirms patient identification using two unique identifiers (Name and DOB) and verifies procedure requested. Verifies female patient pregnancy status when appropriate.
Monitors patient and equipment during procedures, accurately documents exam times (start and stop), patient reactions or problems, and reports concerns or issues immediately to supervisor.
Documents patient and exam occurrences in the appropriate Imaging software database, to include exam start and complete times.
Performs such exams as abdominal, renal, aorta, thyroid, pelvic, obstetrical, bio-physical profiles, vascular studies, testicular and breasts, color flow studies, Doppler studies, renal biopsies, and fluid collections of localized areas. Takes representative anatomical pictures, recognizes normal versus abnormal anatomy, and exhibits knowledge of various pathological processes.
Has thorough knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and physiology to sufficiently pinpoint area of imaging.
Quality of Care
The technologist provides evidence-based care to prevent the development of a Healthcare Acquired Condition and hospital readmissions.
The technologist practices standard precautions during patient contact and while handling contaminated materials.
The technologist complies with CDC hand hygiene guidelines and works to reduce hospital acquired infections and other conditions.
Comply with all regulatory, organizational, and departmental statutes, policies, and procedures.
Patient Satisfaction
Regularly applies AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) as well as other evidence-based behaviors when taking care of patients. Shows empathy care to patients and family members present.
Actively helps the department meet the identified Patient Satisfaction goal.
Demonstrates regular attendance and participation at scheduled department and team meetings. Absences must be communicated as soon as practically possible.
Ensures all licensure, competencies, training, and education are completed in a timely manner.
Participates in and encourage continuous process improvement.
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of a registry eligible ultrasound education program
Certification
Certification in one of the following: ARDMS-RVT, CCI-RVS, or ARRT(VS)
BLS through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in ultrasound imaging
Preferences
Education: Graduate of an ARDMS approved (registry eligible) UltrasoundTechnologist program, an approved ARRT program RT (S) or RT (VS), or an approved registry eligible CCI (RVS) program
Certification: RDMS certification in one or more of the following specialties: Abdomen, OB/GYN, and/or Breast
Experience: Previous experience as a supervisor or a lead
Work Requirements
Able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
Effective oral and written communication skills
Able to manage technical business equipment (i.e., phone, fax, computer etc.).
Able to assist with the movement/manipulation of a patient and equipment weighing up to and over 300 lbs.

Scope of Work: This position is located within the Tohono O'odham Nation Health Care Medical Imaging. The work performed has a direct and substantial impact on the care and wellbeing of the patient. The incumbent receives administrative supervision from the Supervisory Radiology Technologists; however, as a technical authority on ultrasound, the incumbent independently plans and carries out most activities and examinations as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
(Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):
Performs a wide range of complex ultrasound studies to assist in diagnosing and treating patient diseases or injuries.
Receives and reviews requests from physicians and other health care providers for ultrasound examinations of patients.
Correlates clinical history, pertinent clinical data, lab tests, and other ancillary diagnostic exams to obtain an optimal clinical value ultrasound exam.
Receives and positions patients for examination, explains procedures to alleviate patient fears, and secures maximum cooperation.
Selects, sets up, adjusts, and operates ultrasound equipment.
Maintains professional expertise in recognizing the anatomy of various structures within the abdomen and pelvic cavities.
Monitors patient condition during the examination and renders emergency aid, and summons assistance if necessary.
Assist in performing invasive procedures such as biopsies and thoracentesis with highly specialized equipment.
Assist radiologist or physician in reading or evaluating results by providing technologist impressions.
Record diagnostic findings in a systematic retrieval system to maintain confidentiality.
Cognizant of scheduling factors, consideration provided for referral patients transported from various TONHC hospitals and clinics.
Responsible for proper maintenance and performance of ultrasound equipment. Maintain adequate documentation on file, cleans, and organizes the ultrasound unit.
Maintains processing equipment, CD burner, and laser printing at the required level of operation to obtain optimal hard copies and retains a digital image and data management system needed to process ultrasound exams.
Establishes and maintains a variety of logs and records relating to ultrasound activities and functions. Prepare reports on examinations, equipment status and utilization, workload, supply status, consumption, and related matters.
Performs and documents Quality Assurance activities to maintain Joint Commission compliance.
Develops or adapts and documents new or changed procedures to accommodate equipment changes of new techniques in ultrasound.
Keeps abreast of the latest advances in ultrasound equipment and technical updating of procedures by current journals, attending meetings, seminars, and conventions at local, state, and national levels as required by ARDMS or ARRT (US) to maintain active status as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or of American Radiologic Technologist (Ultrasound).
Serve as a mentor and instructor for non-RDMS or ARRT (US) registered technologist at TONHC.
Provide clinical instruction and technical imaging training for non-ARDMS or ARRT (US) technologists studying the art and science of diagnostic imaging.
Meets the training needs of the non-RDMS, ARRT (US) Technologists in diagnostic imaging applications and in preparing for the National Registry required by ARDMS or ARRT (US).
Constantly observes the non-ARDMS or ARRT (US) technologists for techniques, knowledge of anatomy, physiology equipment functions, and professional interrelationship with the patient during the examination.
Assures that the non-ARDMS Technologist produces diagnostic examinations or professional quality.
Responsible for the non-ARDMS Technologist achieving satisfactory quality images for interpretation by the physician monitoring the examination.
Explains in explicit detail the anatomy and pertinent clinical findings of the examinations.
Trains physicians, radiology staff, and other personnel in ultrasound principles, procedures, capabilities, techniques, and equipment.
Explains concepts and principles of the methodology and its use and limitations as a diagnostic tool and provides technical and clinical demonstrations.
Develop ultrasound training plans for other programs.
Incumbents must demonstrate the knowledge and skills of dealing with pediatric through geriatric patients.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
Extensive and intensive knowledge of the concepts, practices, procedures, techniques, and equipment applied to medical ultrasound and considerable skill in using them to conduct the most challenging and varied examinations.
Knowledge of physical principles of sound generation and transmission characteristics of ultrasound equipment to record the interaction of ultrasound to biological tissues.
Knowledge of various complex instruments used, their specific characteristics, and applicability to the appropriate selection of signal processors.
Knowledge of human cross-sectional anatomy and pathology of all body planes.
Knowledge of human embryology as it applies to obstetrical examinations performed at all stages of fetal development.
Knowledge and skill to distinguish between fetal cranial, abdominal and skeletal structures identified as viewed in different planes.
Knowledge of a variety of transducers utilized for examinations or situations, ability to select appropriate equipment to obtain diagnostic scans.
Knowledge of computer operations necessary for the recording of examinations and measurement determinations particularly germane to obstetrical scans.
Knowledge of, and ability to apply emergency first aid and resuscitation techniques to patients exhibiting distress during examination.
Knowledge of Radiology RPMS computer system and standard diagnostic procedure coding for the medical imaging department.
Skill in setting up, adjusting, operating, and maintaining diagnostic ultrasound and ancillary equipment.
Skill in reading sonograms and identifying and explaining significant medical aspects therein.
Possess skills necessary to successfully impart knowledge to others as evidenced by work quality of personnel trained.
Skill in organizing workflow, distribution, scheduling, and submitting reports in a timely and informative manner.
Ability to visualize the position and functioning of three-dimensional forms within the body from a two-dimensional presentation (sonogram or cathode ray screen).
Ability to troubleshoot the RPMS package requiring expertise to correct problems with software.
Ability to use multiple teaching methods to assist in comprehensive non-RDMS training to Technologists and clinical staff.
Ability to maintain a high degree of patience in teaching technical and clinical applications in stressful situations dealing when critically ill patients.
Minimum Qualifications:
Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, meeting the requirements for eligibility to be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Ultrasound or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) through formal education and clinical experience is required.
One year of experience as an UltrasoundTechnologist.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.

Performs diagnostic procedures on patients using ultrasound waves to examine tissue and body structure, providing quality images to radiologists and physicians for interpretation.
Responsibilities
Sets up and adjusts all equipment and manually maneuvers transducers to perform exams.
Implements safety standards and performs appropriate quality control procedures.
Performs routine and complex studies and assists physician in a variety of imaging procedures.
Recognizes significant structures, artifacts, and pathology and equipment limitations.
Checks for accuracy of ordered exams by comparing to written physician order.
Verifies correct patient by two forms of identity verification, prior to starting exam.
Maintains patient confidentiality per established CHN policies regarding HIPAA rights and practices.
Obtains pertinent patient history and documents on requisition or worksheets as required.
Documents LMP and clinical history on requisitions.
Accesses electronic medical record via current patient record system.
Expectations for PACS: Verifies patient's name, accession number, FIN number, study description and study date. Finds name in PACS to verify images. Verifies that all images are included prior to sending file. Fills out correction form as needed. Completes all exams in accordance with department protocols. Assesses image set to assure exam completeness. Retrieves prior relevant studies for radiologist to review and compare. Ensures patient safety.
THE ULTRASOUND TECH FT ROTATING CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION, LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
Certification Required: Registry Eligible and Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association.
