We are looking for an experienced Critical Care Technician to join our Overnight Shift: Wednesday-Saturday (9pm-7am)!
You will be the 'right hand' to our veterinarians on-staff, the helping hands we need to maintain the highest level of care and comfort for our clients' beloved pets. Some of the responsibilities you will own in this role:
Perform nursing care for critical cases, consistently evaluating the patient
Calculating CRI's and providing advanced hospitalization care
Perform in house laboratories
Proficient in IV catheter placement
Give accurate and detailed patient rounds
Perform safe restraint for fractious and frightened patients
Obtain TPR's, keep medical records, understand when to alert DVM
Advocate for the patient and client
Basic Required Qualifications:
High school diploma
2+ years of clinical experience in the veterinary industry
Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interface with staff and clients using tact, patience, professional courtesy, and exhibit confidentiality and discretion where appropriate
An active CA state RVT license is preferred but not required

Vet Assistants will administer vaccinations, parasite prevention and treatment, and assist the veterinarian and RVT with on-site surgeries and euthanasia when appropriate.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Ensure the safety and health of animals within the clinic.
Helps to evaluate animals for signs of illness, injuries and parasites.
Will help determine when an animal needs immediate veterinary care and will notify the Veterinarian and/or RVT.
Prepares and administers medications (orally, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenously) and vaccinations according to instructions and direction from the veterinarian.
Helps the clinic manager to monitor and maintain medical supply and drug inventory.
When needed assists veterinarians in any on-site procedures, including surgery.
Monitors anesthesia, autoclaves surgical packs, and animals during recovery.
Runs and interprets diagnostic tests.
Collects and processes fecal samples, performs skin scrapings. Utilizes a microscope to interpret results and communicate the results to the veterinarian.
Performs basic bandaging and wound care for animals.
Cares for, cleans, and feeds animals in assigned areas.
Enters medical information into the computer system.
Maintains clinical logs and records as directed and assigned by the veterinarian or RVT.
Maintains a sanitary environment in all animal care, exam rooms, treatment and surgery areas.
Escorts clients into the exam room and executes basic pre-exam duties in preparation for Veterinarian exam/consultation.
Maintain a positive and respectful attitude.
Operate within compliance with state, federal, local, AVMA laws and guidelines.
Adhere to the organizations policies and procedures as stated in the employee handbook and Standard Operating Procedures manual.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and evenings.
Attends staff meetings, training, and other events related to the position.

Other duties
Clean and sterilize all instruments, gloves, drapes and equipment used, so that it will be ready the next time they are needed.
Keep log of all surgeries done
Take surgery department inventory on a bi-weekly basis and provide list to inventory manager
Review sterilization dates on bone instruments and orthopedic implants and inventory/ re-sterilize as needed
Maintain all anesthetic machines, autoclave, and any other equipment used in surgery
Thoroughly clean surgery room and area weekly
Knowledge and Skills
The qualified applicant will possess the following knowledge and skills:
Required
Knowledge of basic veterinary practices, procedures and terminology with willingness to pursue further education leading to Registered Veterinary Technician status
Ability to appropriately handle animals up to 70 lbs., and perform routine veterinary medical procedures (i.e. collect samples, draw blood, administer vaccines, etc)
Education equivalent to two years of college or technical school
At least one year of recent experience in veterinary practice or medical environment with increasing responsibilities
Internal applicants must have a meets expectation or better in their current position and approval of current supervisor prior to applying for position
Excellent client communication skills
Organizational and time management skills
Preferred

Administrative:

Qualifications, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: • Graduation from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary technology. • Bachelor's, AA or AS degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science or other related degree preferred. Generally, one year of paid full-time animal husbandry experience substitutes for one year of college level work.) • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a licensed veterinary technician; 1-2 years of experience with exotic and/or zoo animals is preferred • Must be a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in the state of California or obtain CA licensure within 6 months of hire. • Prefer exotic or zoo animal experience but will substitute experience with domestic animal practice that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. • Must obtain a valid California driver's license within 3 months of hire. • Must be insurable on The Living Desert's automobile policy. • Covid vaccination plus one booster required. • Annual TB test with negative reading required.
