Water Plant Operator Apprentice
Salary: $16.20 - $18.22 Per Hour
Position Type: Part Time/Full Time (depending on school status)

General Description:
The purpose of this class within the organization is to undergo on-the-job training to become qualified as an operator of a water treatment plant.
This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.


Minimum Training and Experience:
Enrolled in high school or graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.


Special Certifications and Licenses:
Ability to obtain a state certification from SC LLR as an E-level water operator within one year of employment.
Valid driver's license.


Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of elementary principles of chemistry and general science; good observation; mechanical aptitude. Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures. Ability to obtain a state certification from SC LLR as an E-level water operator within one year of employment. Ability to learn principles and procedures relating to operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant. Ability to develop skill in the operation and maintenance of pumps, valves and related mechanical equipment. Ability to work in a wide variety of weather conditions and exposure to the elements. Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills. Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.


Essential Job Functions:
Performs study and reading assignments, observes demonstrations and otherwise learns the techniques of operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant. Learns and assists in the operation and adjustment of pumps, valves, and related mechanical equipment. Learns and assists in the making of physical tests of water for color, odor, and taste. Learns and assists in the making of chemical tests of water for alkalinity and residual chlorine. Learns and assists in regulating and adjusting chlorinates and other chemical feeders, washing filters, settling basins and dewatering processes. Learns and assists in the preparation and maintenance of activity records and reports. Performs increasingly responsible duties as assigned in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant. Performs all other duties as assigned to meet organizational needs.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment. Must be able to lift or otherwise move objects. Work involves walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to bend, kneel, crouch, climb and reach. Must be able to safely enter and maneuver in confined spaces. Must be able to lift/carry weights of up to 80 - 100 pounds.

Qualifications and Requirements Water Plant Operator I:

  • High School Diploma and/or an Associate's degree in Math, Science, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or another related field supplemented by a minimum of zero to one (0 - 1) years' working experience in the field of Water Treatment Plan Operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License
  • Current South Carolina Class E Water Treatment Operator License or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Current South Carolina Class D Water Treatment Operator License or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
  • Current South Carolina Class C Water Treatment Operator License or the ability to obtain within two (2) years of hire.

Qualifications and Requirements Water Plant Operator II:

  • High School Diploma and/or an Associate's degree in Math, Science, Biology, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or another related field supplemented by a minimum of three (3) years' experience as a Water Treatment Plant Operator, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Working Hours: Sunday - Thursday, 11:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m. (3rd Shift)

May be assigned to work any day of the week on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift.

Salary: $25.4698 Hourly / $52,977.18 Annually

(Shift Differential for 2nd and 3rd Shifts)

Characteristics of the Job

Under general supervision, responsible for the operation and routine adjustment of equipment and facilities of both the pumping and purification sections of the water plant. Work is assigned either orally or in writing and is performed independently. Supervision is carried out by observation of effectiveness of plant operation through an analysis of shift reports and chemical laboratory tests.

Examples of Duties

Regulate the proper supply and dosage rates of necessary chemicals.
Operate and wash filters.
Collect samples of water and conduct chemical tests; record results and make any necessary changes in chemical feedings to meet set standards.
Observe flow dials and recording devices and determine need to start or stop pumps, switch from standard to emergency pumping operations to maintain an adequate water supply.
Check pumping and purification equipment operations and perform necessary lubrication, minor running repairs and preventive maintenance throughout the plant.
Maintain a daily log of plant operations and record or input daily operating data.
Call or pose mechanical defects to the plant manger's attention.
Other duties may be assigned.

Required Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by courses in chemistry or related subjects; considerable experience in water plant operation and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the functions and servicing requirements of mechanical equipment and machinery; the processes involved in the purification of water including some knowledge of chemistry and hydraulics; and occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Skill in the analysis of treatment or pumping problems and formation and implementation of remedies; documenting work activities in computerized maintenance management systems; and operating a personal computer with database, SCADA spreadsheet applications.

Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects; read meters and charts accurately and determine difference in color in tests performed; maintain simple manual or computerized record of shift operation; use independent judgment and take alternative steps in the event of equipment failure; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisor and the general public; and comply with all local, state and federal safety regulations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Illinois driver's license or equivalent upon hire.
Illinois Class C Water Supply Operator's certificate or Class C operator in training designation preferred.
