Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

This individual is responsible for performing all in-house welding work for cutting edge high-field superconducting magnets and tokamak assemblies. This individual also partners with the welding engineer and R&D engineers to develop the weld geometry and techniques, weld specs, and inspection methods needed for welded assemblies for the SPARC tokamak.

This individual will cover our First Shift which will be 7 am to 4 pm EST.
This team member will:Weld and inspect large metallic structures and tooling within specified timelines and budgets Set up welding processes as per specifications, incl. determining the correct equipment to use and methods based on the requirements Read and analyze drawings and take detailed measurements to plan the project layout Cut and join material Perform hand welding or semi-automated welding. Utilize advanced forms of welding when needed. Weld components in vertical, flat, and overhead positions Provide manufacturability feedback to design engineers for weld geometries and material selection Perform welding equipment qualification trials Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement Follow safety procedures at all times
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements: Documented Training or Certification in most of the following: Blueprint Reading and Fabrication, Oxyacetylene Welding, Cutting, Brazing, Basic Shielded Metal Arc Welding, (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)5+ years' experience as a welder on large structural systems and tooling Experience with large metallic structures and manufacturing processes related to welding Experience in producing welds to pass industry standard requirements

Join HII Marine Services Operations (MSO) in Chesapeake, VA as we keep the most powerful Navy the world has known afloat and ready to serve. MSO trades teams provide expert solutions on shipboard alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Assistant Welder candidate will support MSO, working closely with our skilled trades teams on surface ships performing a number of welding processes and related duties on shipboard structural removals, installations and upgrades for industrial equipment. Selected candidate will be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company. #LI-MJ1 *TL

Candidate must be able to demonstrate welding ability on needed processes through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment.

What You Will Do...

* Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement and performance consistent with company values.
* Support trades team by working on active class surface ships to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization
* Assist to meet standards on various contracts such as Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command and Naval Surface Warfare Center.
* Install, operate, maintain, repair and modify structural elements and equipment.
* Assist in a variety of maintenance and technical support on products such as shipboard systems, integrated systems and related equipment/software at company, customer and/or field locations.
* Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
* Maintain effective customer communications and relations. May provide onsite training of customer support personnel.
* Apply understanding of production and processes to assignments.
* Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks related to shipboard maintenance.
* May assist in the development and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
* Perform duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.

What You Must Have...

* Must have High School education/equivalent, and 2 years of related experience.
* Must have welding experience with stick welding (SMAW) process.
* Must be able to work from blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction.
* Must have knowledge of quality control steps and procedures.
* Must be able to follow safety procedures.
* Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance, and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
* Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date, and maintain credentials throughout employment.
* Must be able to travel between 50% - 75% when not assigned to local tasking.
* Must be able to provide hand tools per trades designation.
* Must be a U.S. citizen.

Preferred: Bonus points for...

* Candidate with experience/knowledge in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and/or flux cored arc welding (FCAW) processes/positions preferred
* Candidate with current or prior welding certificates applicable with MIL-STD-248 preferred.
* Candidate with shipboard experience highly desired.
* Candidates who are currently enrolled or have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program are preferred.
* Current Shipyard Competent Person Certification preferred.
* Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate a plus.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.

Essential Functions
• Fluent in understanding job specific WPS / PQR’s and capable of setting machine up for performance in all positions to certified testing criteria.
• Analyze blue prints for weld insignia and the application thereof to assembly components on piping and structural systems.
• The ability to identify correctly, measured, hand dressed, cut and fit: prepare metal surfaces for welding process to be completed per job specific requirements.
• Capable of visual observation of pre and post-welded surfaces; and the interpretation of fulfilled job requirements with micrometer, caliper and other precision measuring
instruments.
• Technically proficient in the interpretation of insufficient weld criteria and knowledge to efficiently blend to repair.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem solver who can understand and follow instruction.
• Accountability for completion of daily work assignments while monitoring quality, safety and health regulations.
• Operate overhead cranes and or forklifts.
• Complies with all company policies, procedures and safety requirements and physically / medically qualified to wear required PPE per OSHA standards.

Work Environment
This position operates out of a fabrication facility. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is sometimes exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. First shift days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Required Education and Experience
• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience in threading, grinding, welding, brazing, rigging, plasma cutting, gas arc cutting.
• Related experience or training.

Preferred Education and Experience
• 6+ Years’ experience in Welding SMAW, FCAW and GTAW, or a combination.
• 2 years vocational technical training.
