Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, one of the nation's oldest and most frequented historical public gardens, is looking for a new Wetlands Technician for the on-site team. This role will assist the Ecologist in managing multiple wetland units in an effort to improve carrying capacity by increasing the amount and availability of food and cover plants to be more attractive to resident and migratory wildlife species.
What you will be doing:
• Assisting in moist soil management activities across the property's wetland units
• Identifying, monitoring, and treating for invasive plant species by means of mechanical, chemical, and biological control methods
• Performing routine trail maintenance in the Audubon Swamp Garden and other specified nature trails
• Co-creating, updating, and maintaining ecological interpretive materials and displays
• Assisting with the nuisance wildlife program, wildlife surveys, and wildlife monitoring programs
• Assisting with the creation of and maintaining all wildlife food plots and pollinator plots
Requirements
Who you are:
• You are wildly passionate about enhancing habitat for our native wildlife. You've got a degree in a relevant field such as but not limited to Biology, Ecology, or Wildlife & Fisheries and 1-2 years of experience (internships and volunteer work included) in habitat management. Experience with wetland management preferred!
• You've got a strong knowledge of wetland systems and skills in identifying native flora and fauna found in the southeastern USA and are comfortable working long days in the field
• You have strong verbal skills and can communicate ecological principles to the public
• You are comfortable connecting with a wide variety of people, and do so by flexing your presentation style to meet the unique needs and backgrounds of the people you're with
• You're tech savvy, and utilize technology to not just streamline and automate process, but to collect data to support decisions regarding the management of the properties natural resources
• As Magnolia is a tourist attraction, this position may require long-days and/or work on the weekends as needed. Join Stantec's Restoration Services team in the Tampa Bay region or Southeast region of Florida to help manage nuisance and exotic vegetation in wetlands, water conversation areas, stormwater treatment areas, canals, and conservation lands. Daily work tasks include traversing conservation areas on foot treating invasive species, operating a boat through the canals, or operating an airboat through the marshes and remote areas. Projects will involve field labor, technical work, and guidance of field crews. A typical work day consists of 10 hours of in‐the‐field physical labor although, following the requirements of specific assignments, may include irregular hours. This position may require overnight travel.
**Your Key Responsibilities**
+ Implementing restoration project work at the ground level under the direction of a Field Supervisor or Project Manager
+ Herbicide application to targeted nuisance/exotic plants using a boat, backpack, or airboat
+ Native planting, seeding, erosion control installation, prescribed fire or any other activities necessary with field implementation of ecological restoration projects
+ Document daily field activities and organization of materials
+ Compliance with all company and client safety requirements
+ Follow corporate policies, operate through the proper management channels, and act in the best interest of the company
**Qualifications**
**Your Capabilities and Credentials**
+ Experience in native and invasive species plant identification
+ Experience working or recreating in the Florida backcountry
+ Experience operating large equipment such as ATVs/UTVs, swamp buggies, airboats, tractors, chippers, and skid steers
+ Experience with herbicide handling, application, and application equipment
+ Experience in ecological restoration techniques
+ Experience in map reading, GIS, and operating a GPS
+ Standard First Aid, CPR, and Red Card
+ Experience in boat operation
+ Experience operating basic hand tools and smaller equipment such as backpack sprayers, augers, chainsaws, and brushcutters
+ Availability and willingness to travel overnight 10% of the time
**Education and Experience**
+ High School Diploma or equivalent
+ Traverse wet and rugged terrain in diverse, sometimes inclement, weather conditions while carrying up to 50 lbs
+ Must be able to swim
