Argonne National Laboratory wind energy engineer job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focusing on tropical and extratropical cyclone modeling for offshore wind turbine risk assessment at the Argonne National Laboratory.

This appointment will be at the Environmental Science Division embedded within our Computer, Environment, and Life Sciences Directorate. The project aims to improve the performance in modeling tropical and extratropical cyclones using a fully coupled atmosphere, ocean and wave modeling system, and determine the impacts of anthropogenic warming on cyclone dynamics. The modeling will be primarily at the mesoscale, and the output will be applied to microscale modeling at the wind turbine scale. Model development, model sensitivity analysis, machine learning, and risk assessment work are all anticipated.

This is a three-year multi-institutional project funded by Department of Energy Wind Energy Technology Office.
In this role you can expect to:

+ Utilize data collected by variety data sources, including satellite, in-situ observations, and more.

+ Utilize state-of-the-art numerical models such as weather forecast and research (WRF) model, WaveWatch III and Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM).

+ Interact with a wide range of talents (model developers, atmospheric scientists such as hurricane experts, ocean/coastal scientists, data scientists) from the whole spectrum of the wind energy scientific community;

+ Present and publish their work at major symposia and journals.

**Position Requirements**

Required Skills:

+ Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically within 0-3 years) in atmospheric science or related field

+ Experience of running atmospheric/oceanic numerical models in a high-performance computing environment

+ Knowledge of high-level programming languages (e.g., Python) under Unix/Linux environment

+ Effective verbal communication skills and effective written skills

+ Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork

Preferred Skills:

+ Strong experience of atmospheric modeling used for studying cyclones

MISSION

The field engineer is responsible for providing product and application expertise to the WIND POWER market, supporting our field sales activities. Advise customers about the best selection of solutions available in Mersen product portfolio. Maintain high level of market knowledge. Keep close communication with engineering groups helping them to learn the best features of Mersen products. Validate new product introduction in the renewables market. Applicants from Midwest US as well as Texas will be considered.


Main Accountabilities

  • Travel to site or engineering offices to conduct uptower inspections, network with key engineers and present key data to main stakeholders
  • Technical data collection and initial analysis of customer processes in support of business initiatives
  • Perform products troubleshoot activities in the field when needed.
  • Travel requirements within the United States & Canada, including trade shows and other business events.
  • Work with territory managers and field technicians to drive products specifications and help to advance sales processes through regular meetings with customers.
  • Collaborate with OEMs and end users to resolve their doubts on the Mersen products and collaborate to push for the best solutions to be installed on their machines
  • Develop strong relationship with customer’s engineering teams.
  • Collaborates with marketing, sales, customer service and R&D teams to develop and deploy new products/ solutions launch packages and tools.
  • Present data to R&D team to help understand products behavior and design future solutions
  • Create post installation/inspections reports and send these to customers. Present report results to customer when needed.
  • Hands-on work with customer solutions, products; interpret drawings, specifications, or schematics
  • Continually seek and develop new business, add-on business, prospects through networking, cold calling, and other prospecting methods
  • Track, follow-up and monitor all projects in a timely manner using CRM
  • Respond to requests for product identification, new products/solutions as per market demands.
  • Help to introduce new products/solutions in the renewables market.
  • Create and update slide decks and other documents created to promote products in the market
