Find a Job You Really Want In
Explore the Most Popular Engineering Branches by State in 2026

Choosing a specialization in engineering can be a daunting task, especially with the vast array of options available today. As technology evolves, new branches of engineering are emerging, continually expanding the field. Engineering disciplines can be categorized by various criteria, including materials (like petroleum or ceramics engineering), functions (such as sewage or traffic engineering), and their relationships with scientific domains like chemistry or nuclear energy.
Engineering remains one of the most sought-after professions in the United States, drawing interest from job seekers nationwide. With a diverse set of engineering branches, it’s natural to wonder if job search trends vary by state.
We investigated this by creating a map that highlights the most searched engineering disciplines in each state. For instance, Aerospace Engineering tops the charts in Tennessee, while Florida shows a strong interest in Marine Engineering, likely due to its coastal geography.
Regions like the Midwest and the Mojave Desert show fewer engineering interests, but New York stands out as the leading state for searches in 14 different engineering branches. Residents in New York are particularly keen on Environmental Engineering, while Oregonians gravitate towards Control Engineering, and Louisianans show a preference for Petroleum Engineering.
How We Analyzed This Data
Using Google Trends, we input various search terms to gauge their popularity across different states. For example, searching for Applied Engineering reveals that Texas leads in this area.
By analyzing over a hundred search queries related to engineering jobs, we identified the most popular disciplines in each state. We focused on data from the past five years and included the term “jobs” in our searches whenever possible, although we omitted it in some cases where data was sparse.
Below, you’ll find the leading engineering discipline for each state, along with additional notable branches. While New York dominated with the highest variety of disciplines, both Texas and California closely followed, revealing some surprising trends along the way.

Understanding Key Engineering Disciplines
While many engineering fields are well-known, some may be less familiar. Here’s a brief overview of several noteworthy disciplines:

Tissue Engineering
Tissue engineering focuses on repairing and regenerating tissues in the human body, including blood, bone, cartilage, skin, and muscle.

Signal Processing
This discipline analyzes and modifies signals, which convey information such as images and sound.

Engineering Psychology
Engineering psychology studies how humans interact with machines, aiming to improve both product design and user experience.

Reliability Engineering
This field concentrates on creating reliable products that function consistently over time.

Mechatronics
Mechatronics integrates mechanics and electronics, encompassing advanced automation and robotics in modern engineering.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the landscape of engineering careers is as diverse as the states themselves. Job seekers can explore a myriad of opportunities tailored to their interests and regional demands. For more insights and resources, visit Zippia.
