Some jobs, like mine, involve sitting in front of a computer all day typing. My biggest health risk comes from not moving enough.

Other jobs, like Roofing and Construction Contractors are a bit riskier to say the least.

And while I’m glad I have health insurance in case something does go wrong outside of work, I can’t imagine working in a dangerous occupation without insurance.

But people do just that — go to work without having health insurance; 11.7% of the prime working age population with full time jobs lack insurance according to our data — basically inline with the national average.

However, that lack of insurance is not evenly spread across all occupations. Almost everyone who works full time in the military has insurance (.3% uninsured), but 50.6% of those same roofers mentioned earlier lack insurance.

So not only are roofers working some incredibly risky jobs, but they aren’t even insured more than half the time.

Here’s a look at the ten occupations with the highest levels of uninsured workers:

  1. Roofers (50.5% uninsured)
  2. Drywall Installers, Ceiling Tile Installers, And Tapers (49.5%)
  3. Plasterers And Stucco Masons (49.1%)
  4. Dishwashers (47.3%)
  5. Fence Erectors (45.8%)
  6. Carpet, Floor, And Tile Installers And Finishers (45.2%)
  7. Miscellaneous Agricultural Workers, Including Animal Breeders (43.9%)
  8. Painters And Paperhangers (43.1%)
  9. Helpers, Construction Trades (42.8%)
  10. Helpers-Installation, Maintenance, And Repair Workers (40.5%)
  11. Grounds Maintenance Workers (39%)

A pretty common theme? People working in construction have lower levels of health insurance.

For a summary of our findings and more on how we calculated this data, read on.

Summary Of Findings

  • The overall uninsured rate for the prime working age population with full time jobs is 11.7%.
  • The occupation with the lowest level of the uninsured is “First-Line Enlisted Military Supervisors” at .3%.
  • Roofers have the highest uninsurance rate of 50.5%.
  • Military occupations generally have the lowest levels of uninsured workers.
  • The construction industry has very high levels of uninsured workers.
  • While not in the specific purview of this analysis, the eyeball test says there’s an inverse relationship between income and uninsurance rates.

How We Determined The Occupations With The Lowest Levels Of Health Insurance

To calculate the uninsured rate, we looked at the most recently available American Community Survey PUMS data for 2012-2016.

Specifically, we looked at:

  1. The prime working age population (Ages 25-64)
  2. That had a full time job (worked more than 35 hrs a week,

Then we looked at the HICOV — Health insurance coverage recode that identifies if a person had insurance or not. We weighted each record using the appropriate “Person Weight” variable PWGTP and grouped them by the some 475 occupations listed in the Census data.

While we highlight the top and bottom of the data, the entire table is available below.
