By Matthew Zane
Oct. 26, 2023

A machine learning engineer is a professional responsible for designing, developing, and implementing machine learning models and systems to solve complex data-driven problems. They work at the intersection of computer science and data science, utilizing their expertise in algorithms, programming, and data analysis to create predictive and automated solutions.

Crafting an effective machine learning engineer resume can be challenging due to the complexity of the role. To create a resume that resonates with hiring managers who may have a different technical background, it’s essential to focus on quantifiable achievements, emphasize relevant hard skills, and highlight your experience in deploying machine learning solutions.

We’ve conducted an in-depth analysis of numerous machine learning engineer resumes across different career levels to identify the most effective strategies for securing more interview opportunities. Why this resume works

  • This machine learning engineer resume demonstrates how their work positively impacted business success rather than merely focusing on personal job responsibilities.

  • It quantifies achievements so that any hiring manager can understand exactly what resulted from the individual’s efforts.

  • It minimizes job-specific jargon, ensuring readers without the same technical background can still understand what they did in their last roles.

Entry-Level Machine Learning Engineer Resume

Why this resume works

  • Utilizing a resume summary instead of a resume objective (even for an entry-level resume) shows what you have to offer based on your experiences and skills rather than what you hope to offer in the future.

  • Bringing in projects from college demonstrates real-world experience in ways that are totally applicable to the business world (not just academia).

  • While you can bring in non-relevant side jobs you had in school, your best bet is to focus the limited real estate of a one-page resume on things like internships and details of your educational background that tie directly into the role you’re applying for.

Why this resume works

  • It can be tough to show off relevant skills when going for a junior level role you’ve never had before, but by focusing specifically on tasks that demonstrate experience with similar tasks in the role you’re applying for, you can make a hiring manager much more comfortable giving you a chance.

  • Keywords are important for getting past ATS (applicant tracking systems) to make sure your resume actually makes it past the bots and into the hands of a human reader.

  • Using numbers and percentages throughout the experience section shows exactly what impact you’ve had in past jobs, making it easier for a hiring manager or recruiter to envision you in the role they’re hiring for.

Senior Machine Learning Engineer Resume

Senior Machine Learning Engineer Resume

Why this resume works:

  • Applying for a senior-level position means you can break the “one-page resume” rule — you should have tons of relevant work experience to brag about at this point, so don’t be worried about hitting the 1.5 to 2-page mark for a senior-level resume.

  • Show off your promotions if you’ve been with the same company for several years; make it easy for a hiring manager to see that you’ve been successful enough at your job to climb the ladder, gain more responsibilities, and excel in new roles.

  • Earlier positions in your career might not be as relevant anymore, so save some space by skipping bullet points for these; you can still mention the job title, company name, and dates, but your actual work experience for these old jobs isn’t nearly as important as your recent wins.

  • Certifications are expected for many senior-level roles, so don’t leave these off — they’re even more essential than your decades-old college experience, since they show you’re up-to-date on the latest trends in your field.

How to write a machine learning engineer resume

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to write a machine learning engineer resume:

  1. Contact information

Your name should be the biggest text on the page and be at or near the top of the document.

Your location should only include your city and state, not your home address.

Your email address should be professional, but not your current work email address.

Your social media can be included if you have a fully-fledged LinkedIn page or a social media page or website that showcases a relevant skill set.

    Resume Contact Info Example:

    Hank Rutherford Hill

    St. Arlen, Texas | 333-111-2222 | hank.hill@gmail.com

  2. Work experience

Your employment history is the most essential part of a resume. List your work experience in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent experience and working backward from there.

Here are some tips for making your work experience stand out:

    • Start each bullet point with a past tense action verb (for example, directed, managed, spearheaded, collaborated, etc.)

    • List achievements, not job responsibilities

    • Use numbers for amounts, percentage changes, and frequency to quantify the impact of your work. For example, “led a team of six, increased revenue by $100k, oversaw a 20% improvement, or led weekly meetings.”

    • List a job title and your start and end date at the start of each work experience.

    • Each bullet point should follow this format: action verb -> task or project -> metric or result.

    • Periods at the end of bullet points are optional, but be consistent with whatever formatting you choose.

    Resume Work Experience Example:
Machine Learning Engineer Mar 2020 – Present
McKinsey & Company Inc – New York, NY

    • Spearheaded the development of a novel recommendation system, increasing user engagement by 20% and boosting revenue by $2.1 million annually.

    • Designed and implemented a real-time anomaly detection system, reducing false positives by 18% and saving the company over $500k in operational costs

    • Reduced model training time by 30% through parallel computing techniques.

  3. Skills

Your resume skills section should have between 6-12 skills, with more hard skills (technical abilities) than soft skills (personality traits). Be sure to tailor your skills section for each job posting you’re applying for.

It’s okay if you don’t have 100% of the skills listed in the job description, but meeting at least 80% of the qualifications will help you get past the ATS (and the hiring manager).

    Resume Skills Section Example:

    • Machine learning algorithms

    • Python and R programming

    • Deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)

    • Data preprocessing

    • Model training and evaluation

    • Statistical analysis

    • Data visualization

    • Cloud computing (e.g., AWS, Azure)

    • Version control (e.g., Git)

    • Communication

    • Problem-solving

    • Critical thinking

  4. Education

Your resume’s education section should include:

    • The name of your school

    • The date you graduated (Month, Year or Year are both appropriate)

    • The name of your degree

Optional subsections for your education section include:

    • Academic awards (Dean’s List, Latin honors, etc.)

    • GPA (if you’re a recent graduate and your GPA was 3.5+)

    • Extra certifications

    • Academic projects (thesis, dissertation, etc.)

Other tips to consider when writing your education section include:

    • If you’re a recent graduate, you might opt to place your education section above your experience section

    • The more work experience you get, the shorter your education section should be

    • List your education in reverse chronological order, with your most recent and high-ranking degrees first

    • If you haven’t graduated yet, you can include “Expected graduation date” to the entry for that school

    • If you graduated more than 15 years ago, you should consider dropping your graduation date to avoid age discrimination.

    Resume Education Section Example:
    Bachelor’s Computer Science May 2017
New York University – New York, NY

  5. Certifications

Machine learning engineer certifications are great to add to your resume if you have them. They show that you’re up-to-date on the latest trends in your field and that you care about professional development.

You should list the name of the certification(s) you have, along with the date you received them.

    Resume Certification Section Example:
    IBM Machine Learning Professional
    Mar 2018

    AWS Certified Machine Learning Specialty
    Jan 2017

  6. Resume Summary

A resume summary statement is 1-3 sentences at the top of your resume that quickly summarizes your professional background. The summary statement should include your job title, years of experience, and an impressive accomplishment.

Remember to emphasize skills and experiences that feature in the job description.

    Resume Summary Statement Example:

Skilled machine learning engineer with 5+ years of experience developing and deploying ML models. Proficient in deep learning and data analysis, providing data-driven solutions for complex problems and collaborating effectively in cross-functional teams.
