Find a Job You Really Want In
When selecting a career, most people first think about salary and job security. However, the profession you choose can significantly influence various aspects of your life, including your romantic relationships.
Jobs not only correlate with marriage and divorce rates but also affect how potential partners perceive you. Some professions project desirable traits like intelligence and nurturing qualities, while others may lead to perceptions of unambition or unsuitability as a romantic partner.
We conducted a survey with 1,000 workers to discover which jobs they find most attractive (and which they do not) in a romantic partner. The findings revealed significant differences between what men and women value in a partner’s profession.
Below, you can explore the most and least attractive jobs, along with the common characteristics that shape these perceptions.
Main Findings
- Women identified “doctor” as the most attractive job for a partner, while men favored “nurse.”
- The top 25 most attractive jobs for women had an average salary of $74,154.
- Conversely, the most attractive jobs for men averaged $56,129.
- Men showed a stronger preference for professions associated with physical appearance, such as dancers and actors.
- While teachers ranked among the top 25 for men, no education-related jobs appeared in women’s top 25.
- Additionally, men’s top 25 included several service-oriented jobs, such as maid and waitress.
- Interestingly, farmers ranked as the 25th most attractive job for women.
- Men considered “janitor” the least attractive job for a partner, whereas women found fast food positions less appealing.

Methodology
To determine the most and least desirable jobs in a romantic partner, we surveyed 1,000 workers using a list of 250 common professions.
The desirability of each job was measured by the number of respondents who selected it as attractive or unattractive. Some jobs, like police officer, generated mixed opinions, being seen as both desirable and undesirable by different respondents.
Salary figures throughout the article reflect the average earnings for these careers, as reported by Zippia. Individual job titles and experience will, of course, influence earning potential.
The Hottest and Not-So-Hot Jobs
In general, the most desirable jobs tend to offer higher salaries and require more education, while less desired jobs are often associated with lower pay and less stability.
However, it’s not solely about income. For instance, truck drivers earn an average of $51,066, a figure that exceeds many of the more attractive professions. This raises questions about whether societal biases or lifestyle choices contribute to their lower desirability in the dating market.
Perceptions surrounding certain jobs also play a significant role in romantic attraction. For example, teachers are often viewed as nurturing individuals, which may explain their appeal to many men. Conversely, politicians might be seen as untrustworthy, contributing to their lower desirability among women.
Our advice? Rather than pursuing a specific career solely to attract a partner, focus on finding a profession you are passionate about and seek someone who appreciates you for who you are. After all, you spend a substantial amount of your waking hours at work, just as you do with your significant other. It’s essential to find fulfillment in both areas.
