Some veterans have a hard time getting into the workforce after having served. That’s why so many of them start their own business.

With more than 2.4 million of all American businesses being veteran-owned, it goes without saying that some states are definitely more supportive than others.

So we looked into it. By finding how many veteran-owned businesses were in each state and how many state-based sales go toward veterans, we were able to determine the states that provide the most support.

These states are great places of support for veterans who are looking to start their own company. Make sure you keep reading to find out which states are the least supportive.

How We Determined The Most Supportive States For Veteran-Owned Businesses

There are many ways to measure support. Ultimately, we decided to see where veteran-owned businesses are thriving to determine which states are creating an environment where veterans have all the tools they need to succeed.

We looked at two factors to determine the best states for veteran business owners:

  • The percent of all businesses owned by a veteran
  • The percent of state-based sales that go towards veterans

Our data came from the US Government’s Small Business Administration, and used the most recent numbers available.

1. New Hampshire

Percent of Veteran-Owned Businesses: 12
New Hampshire is the most supportive state for veteran-owned businesses. In fact, the state is so supportive that veteran-owned businesses occupy 12% of all businesses there. But what may be even more impressive is that 6% of state-based sales go toward veterans, which is the highest percentage in the U.S.

2. South Carolina

Percent of Veteran-Owned Businesses: 13

The second-most veteran supported state is South Carolina. A whopping 13% of all of its businesses are veteran-owned businesses, making it the highest percentage of veteran-owned businesses. What’s more, is that 5% of the state’s sales go toward supporting veterans. It’s very clear that South Carolina not only supports veteran-owned businesses but also wants to see them succeed.

3. Mississippi

Out of all the businesses in Mississippi, 11.4% of them are veteran-owned. Which is why Mississippi is the third-most supportive state in the U.S. The state probably even has a “Veteran’s Welcome” sign from all the support it offers.

4. Alabama

Alabama is definitely on the list for supporting veteran-owned businesses. Especially since 11.2% of all businesses there are owned by veterans. What’s even more impressive is that 5% of the state’s sales go toward supporting veterans. The Roll Tide state loves its veterans.

5. Maine

Maine found its spot on this list at No. 5. From 4% of the state sales supporting veterans to 11% of all businesses being veteran-owned, it’s easy to see why.

6. Tennessee

Percent of Veteran-Owned Businesses: 10.8
Tennessee is the sixth-most supportive state of veteran-owned businesses. The state sets aside 5% of its sales to provide support for its veterans, which is the fifth-highest percentage in the country. One thing’s for sure. If you’re a veteran with an idea for a business, you’ll be fully supported in Tennessee.

7. West Virginia

The seventh-most supportive state of veteran-owned businesses is West Virginia. The state features the sixth-highest percent of veteran-owned businesses at 11.3%. That’s a lot of veteran-owned businesses being supported by the state! On top of that, West Virginia makes sure that 4% of state sales go to supporting veterans.

8. South Dakota

At No. 8 we have South Dakota. Even though it’s ranked eighth, the 5% of state sales that go toward veterans is actually the sixth-highest percentage in the country. And even though only 10.6% of the state’s total businesses are veteran-owned, that’s still a high percentage compared to some other states.

9. North Carolina

North Carolina is known on the list of most supportive states of veteran-owned businesses as the ninth-most supportive. Especially since 4% of all state sales go toward supporting veterans. With that kind of support, you’ll have your business up and running in no time!

10. Virginia

Virginia concludes our list of the most supportive states of veteran-owned businesses. Although it’s sitting at No. 10, the state actually features an incredible stat that makes it a great place for veteran-owned businesses to call home. Virginia has the third-highest percent of veteran-owned businesses in the country with a whopping 12%. Your business will have all the support it needs.

Supporting Veteran-Owned Businesses

These 10 states know that transitioning from active duty to the workplace can be difficult. So that’s why they’re so supportive of veterans owning their own businesses.

From the sheer volume of veteran-owned businesses to state-based sales that are set aside to support veterans, these states are the perfect environment for any veteran who is considering starting a business.
